Connected to Distraction: The Effects of Automotive Infotainment Systems on Driving Safety
I explored the severity of the distracted driving problem, and how best to address it. It turns out that a well designed system beats out people using handheld devices quite handily. A good thing because crashes involving the use of handheld devices is still going up as a percentage despite bans in most states.
I finally came to the conclusion that careful design was a must, but the real solution is Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Monitoring for difficult traffic situations and either giving warnings or automatically braking, and gaze tracking to warn the driver if their eyes are spending too much time off the road or if they're getting drowsy.
