TESC BA in Criminal Justice. Need a Advisor/Mentor
#1
Greetings, I am trying to figure out which classes I have left for a BA in Criminal Justice. I had a few questions I couldn't find the answers too. If I could get some answers, that would be great.

I am wanting to do the pay per credit tuition plan. I completed the police academy for my state and passed all the state certifications tests. They are listed on my college transcript as Non-credit vocational courses. I believe I could get some upper credit hours and residency hours through them from a prior learning assessment. So here are a few questions,

1.) Will them being listed on my college transcript hurt me in anyway? (i.e will they automatically be transcribed).

2.) How much paperwork will be involved in a prior learning assessment?

3.) Where can I take the PLA classes for free?(Additionally, I heard that some places cover the cost for the first 12 credits if you complete the pla courses with them. Any truth to that?)

Here are the vocation courses I have on my transcript if it helps

DART-FIRING STUN GUN
INTRO TO LAW ENFORCEMENT
LEGAL
HUMAN ISSUES
COMMUNICATIONS
VEHICLE OPS
FIREARMS
DEFENSV TACTICS
CRIMNL INVESTIGATNS
CRIME SCENE INVEST
PHYSICAL FITNESS I
PHYSICAL FITNESS II
FIRST AID
PATROL I
PATROL II
TRAFFIC STOPS
DUI TRAFFIC STOPS
TRAFFIC CRASH INV
PHYSICAL FITNESS III

Next, I have some questions on degree requirements. before that here are the criminal justice courses I've completed(that count for credits).

INTRO TO CRIM
CRIMINAL PROCEDURE
INTRO CRMNL JUSTICE
CRIMINAL LAW
COURTS & JUDICIAL PROCESS

1.) Will any of those classes cover the "Public Policy and Criminal Justice" and "Research Methods" requirements? If not, are there any test out options for those?

2.) Is every upper level credit required to be under the area of study? (i.e Can I have a class in general education that counts towards the upper level requirements?

3.) Realistically how fast can I complete the capstone? I'm wanting to get the BA as fast as possible. Is there a fast track option for the capstone?

4.) Finally, if I could get someone to review my courses and compare them to the requirements of the BA to see if I missed anything that would be great. Anybody? Ill PM you if your willing.

Thanks for the help!

If TESC will do this, you will be better offer with having them review your certification/license for credit. They already give college credit for training from a few correctional and law enforcement agencies.

1. You will not get credit for non-credit, vocational courses. Like I said above, ask TESC if they will review your credentials for credit.

2. TESC expects 5 pages per credit for prior learning assessments.

3. You can take Kaplan's PLA course for free. That will waive the PLA course requirement at TESC and will earn you 3 credits through ACE, but the Kaplan course won't follow TESC's formatting expectations. You can read through TESC's PLA courses for free and they will count toward the PLA course requirement, but you won't earn any credits.

1. No

2. TESC only has UL credit requirements for the area of study. So, yes, all 18 UL credits have to be in the AOS. The required capstone counts for 3 of those credits.

3. The capstone will be 12 weeks regardless. You have the online and guided study options, but they're both always 12 weeks.

4. KayV will probably have the patience for that. I'll just post my test out/Penn Foster/Propero plan for the BA in Criminal Justice. There is no use in trying to fit your vocational credits into a plan because TESC will evaluate your credentials differently.

First off congrats on completing the police academy.

I definitely know you're not an NJ LEO with the stun gun training? What state are you certified in? Check ACE website or NCCRS and see if your state or academy had their training evaluated.

TESC has law enforcement training already evaluated, but only list NJ and PA.
Academic Program Reviews

I'm sure they will give you credit as every academy covers a lot of the same material. Some more than others.

You will have to do public policy, research methods, and victimology and criminal behavior. I'll have to check my evaluation for further info.

Sanantone, I have a follow up question for you. The college I completed the academy at does offer to add 24 credit hours to my transcripts for all the courses. They would also go under the Criminal justice area of study (for an associates degree). They just require me to submit a Articulation Form.

Would this change the way tesc views the courses on the transcript? I.e would they try to assign each course a equivalency or would they give me 24 blanket credits with no real description?

The reason I delayed thus far on submitting the form is because I was hoping that if I went through tesc it would also count towards the Per credit tuition plan's residency requirement.

Jawbreakingrr, The academy was for Florida. Do you know if they would apply equivalency classes if they reviewed the certification? I'm hoping so because I believe some of the equivalency classes would be upper level.

From what it seems, TESC has evaluated NJ police training. I don't see any active NJ police training on ACE or NCCRS. All the courses from my academy seem to be in the lower level, which fell into free electives. I already had an Associates in CJ. TESC gave me five courses 15 credits for the academy and later 6 credits for specialized in-service training.

I would email admissions and ask them how and if they would except your training. If not have the college where your academy is located put it on a transcript like you mentioned. I think that would be your best route, because TESC gives 24 credits for NJ local Police Training, which is the same as your academy. Unless you are an NJ State Trooper, TESC gives 34 credits for their training.

Good Luck. Keep us posted.
