ASNSM in Mathematics requirements
#1
I am beginning to put together a degree plan for an associates in mathematics from TESC. Most of the requirements are pretty straight forward, however, I am a little confused about the college mathematics requirement listed in the general education section. Could you take the college mathematics CLEP? when i looked at the description for this it clearly states that its not for math or science majors - yet the BA in mathematics at TESC also has this as a general ed requirement.

edited to say - the ultimate goal is actually a BA in mathematics.

On some degrees they list a need for Algebra or Stats but in this case since you are taking the advanced courses as the area of study itself you are fine with the CLEP. Since the CLEP is six credits, the extra three credits will be split off and serve in the electives needed right below it on the degree plan. Should you already have enough credits in that elective area, they'd roll over to your next open elective spot or land in free electives if everything else is full.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

And it is not listed in the major/area of study section Smile That is normal for math majors: you can take whatever lower maths you like but the lowest one that "counts towards your major" is almost always Calc1. I started with Pre-Calc as a freshman. That course's credits counted on all of my transcripts in some category but never towards the math major. I know other majors work similarly.

I would use CLEP, Aleks and TESCs TECEP to fill GenEd, as well as 6cr towards the AOS requirements. I've listed some of the alternative study math credit below (CBE/Aleks). They serve to build your math foundation and as an added benefit are 24 cheap 100 level credits. Looks as if all courses will transfer seamlessly from the AS to the BA.
