TESC Accounting Elective

I have just finished planning the rest of the credits I need to take at TESC to complete my BSBA in Accounting and I have 1 Accounting Elective that I still need to plan.... My other Accounting Electives are an Auditing course and a Straighterline Managerial Accounting course. Does anyone have any guidance as to what I can use as my final Accounting elective?

Also, I don't have any experience with Straighterline, so any guidance there would be helpful as well.

One elective that should work is the Federal Income Taxation TECEP exam through TESC.

One caveat here- do you eventually want a CPA license? If so, check the educational requirements for your state or wherever you plan on getting licensed to see what classes they expect you to take. I would think that Income Tax is one of them, but they may not accept credit-by-exam, so check on that before taking the TECEP.

Thanks for the input! I tried to see if testing will meet the requirements to sit for the CPA exam but I'm still a little confused. I'm not sure if I will end up going that route, but definitely want to have the option in case I decide to! Below is the information I found regarding becoming a licensed CPA in New Jersey:

Does the New Jersey State Board of Accountancy accept Pass/Fail classes toward the 150 hour credit requirement?
Answer: Pass/fail courses are acceptable in New Jersey provided credit is received on an official transcript form at a regionally accredited school. These courses usually do not count toward the GPA credits but as long as the candidate passed and received credit for the courses, New Jersey will accept them.

I currently have my bachelor's degree in Marketing from an accredited school. I'm interested in becoming a CPA. I have 136 credits including 24 business credits to fulfill that requirement. I want to take some Accounting classes at a community college to fulfill my accounting credit requirement. Would the accounting classes that I take at the community college count towards the 150 credit requirement since I already have my Bachelor's from an accredited school?
Answer: At the undergraduate level, you will need to take 24 semester hours in accounting from a business school or college of business which is accredited by AACSB, ACBSP or other accrediting agency recognized by the State Board or 30 semester hours of accounting from an educational institution which is accredited by the Middle States Association, Commission on Higher Education or other accrediting agency recognized by the Board. These credit hours must include courses covering the subjects of financial accounting, auditing, taxation and management accounting.

From this information or prior experience, can anyone tell me if I am able to take the Federal Tax TECEP and have it count or if I actually need to take the course??

Rachel, it's not 100% clear if the Income Tax TECEP will qualify, so contact the licensing agency and get it in writing so you can put the matter to rest. It looks like you will need an additional two courses in accounting beyond what TESC requires to qualify for a NJ CPA license, plus Straighterline courses probably don't meet the licensing requirements so you may need three additional courses to get licensed, which could be grad courses if you decide you want an MS in Accounting. Furthermore, do you already meet the 150 credit requirement?

If you decide to take additional undergrad accounting courses, I recommend also looking at Adams State College or LSU for additional credits.

Thanks for the input Yenisei. I do not meet the 150 credit requirement yet, so am thinking I may end up going for my masters to meet that requirement. I will have 135 credits when I graduate from TESC, so I'm not sure exactly what I will do. I have read that you can sit for the CPA exam with a Bachelor's degree and then have an unlimited amount of time to meet the 150 credit requirement but will not be licensed until doing so. Since I would most likely have to take an additional 3 Accounting courses to meet the requirement, it would only be another 3 after that to meet the 150 credits. :hurray: I took a look at LSU and they seem to have some Accounting classes that I would really be interested in! That seems like it may be a good route. Any idea if Business Law courses may count towards the Accounting credit requirement? LSU does have it under accounting but it seems to me that it may not count.

Hi Rachel,

I just thought I'd chime in here. I am also a student at TESC pursuing the accounting degree. I am pretty sure the managerial class will NOT count toward your accounting electives. I just ran an academic eval for my own transcript to verify and here's what is says in the accounting elective section:

"Complete 12 credits in accounting except introduction to financial/managerial accounting (or principles of accounting), intermediate accounting sequence,and accounting field experience"

Basically what they're saying is that the freshman and sophomore level accounting classes don't count towards the electives. These would be acc 101, 102, 201, and 202. If I am not mistaken, managerial accounting at straighterline is the equivalent of acc 102 at TESC (managerial accounting).

Since I'm not an official transcript evaluator for TESC I could be mistaken but you might want to double check with them. Take care and good luck!

Ooops... I just want over to SL to double check and I think I was mistaken. It looks like what they call "managerial accounting" transfers to tesc as "cost accounting." Actually I am happy about that because I also needed another acc elective. Sorry for the bother.

Thanks LovesHarmony... I actually submitted my plan to TESC and yes, the Straighterline course counts as TESC's Cost Accounting... I just need one more and am thinking of actually taking a class as I'm thinking more and more about taking the CPA exam and think I will need a few more Accounting credits.

I'm trying to help someone else out here- he is looking for UL accounting courses from a school which he can take without needing a proctor. Does anyone have any suggestions?
