Hey guys, this is my first time I'm taking a clep test, and I'm not exactly sure what/how to study for this bio test.
I know what I'm asking has been answered in numerous threads, but I'm just feeling overwhelmed by all the resources. I was thinking about speedyprep.com and also instacert because I heard great things about the flashcards. Would 1 of these by themselves be enough to pass this test? Or would I need both, or more? Also, I was thinking of taking the test in about a month, probably studying a 15 hours a week, would that be enough?
Thank You!

Hey Chris,
Biology is a moderately difficult test only because of the breadth of the subject. Being overwhelmed is understandable. I'd never taken a biology class, but passed the CLEP with a 71. I exclusively used the Crash Course Biology videos on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnQe0xW_...1D684D3ADF (I'll try a link, but last time I tried, it was edited out...I know, an external link in a forum in the year 2015, how scandalous.) I watched most of the videos, then I took the Peterson's practice tests, along with the official CLEP practice test. If a something on the test seemed difficult or foreign, I re-watched the corresponding 10 minute Crash Course video. In all, it took me less than a week of preparation. I found the content to be spot on.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

No one can tell you if 15 hours per week is enough. Everyone is different. The exam objectives are published in the CLEP Official Study Guide, which you can get for a few dollars if you get a slightly older used version. The exam objectives from a few years ago are the same.
It is common to be overwhelmed by the biology CLEP. Try this to guide your study: http://www.degreeforum.net/general-educa...ology.html

Have you ever taken biology? Even in high school? Do you have an interest in the subject? Are you good at memorizing? It's hard to say if 15 per week for 1 month is enough for a person to learn a year's worth of college biology, too many variables.

You're talking about spending about 60 hours of study time total. In class time for a 3 credit class would be around 48 hours in a traditional setting. So this is doable time wise.
I recommend finding a good college biology book (get one with chapter summaries). Once you read / learn the material hit the sample tests and summaries. There is some fantastic material via youtube also e.g. search "mit biology"

That exam represents two semesters - 1 year- and is generally taught with lab. So, contact hours for biology 101 and 102 with lab at ABC Community College look like this:
Semester 1
lecture 3 credits= 3 hours / week x 16 = 48
lab 1 credit (1:3) = 3 hours / week x 16 = 48
Semester 1
lecture 3 credits= 3 hours / week x 16 = 48
lab 1 credit (1:3) = 3 hours / week x 16 = 48
Contact hours 192
Remember a passing score (50) represents what the "C" students in scored after taking 1 year of college biology.

My sisters finished a Biology high school course, then used the REA, SpeedyPrep and the Official CLEP study guide to prep for the CLEP. They took a couple weeks to get ready and passed with scores in the 60s.

While some schools do give 6 credits for this, others only give 3-4cred. I don't recall this being a particularly difficult test back when I took it. I'd equate it more to a year of high school biology. :-)
As usual, everybody is different and YMMV.

Some schools give 8 hours credit. Think about it, college credit for $10/semester hour!

I think that your study plan is fine, but if you could study more hours in fewer weeks, then I think that you'd do better. But then like someone else said, everyone is different, so that could just be my take on it. I would definitely recommend InstantCert for this one; they're flashcards are invaluable. Do NOT skip any of them: do them all. Also, check out FreeClepPrep. As the name implies, it's a free resource and a great help for this exam. I passed with a 69 in 3 weeks, studying five days a weeks, about seven hours a day. I probably could've taken it a week sooner and passed, though. At the time, it was just my second CLEP and we didn't really have a handle on how soon you should take tests and stuff.
