Syllabus details
#1
Hello All!!

I'm registered to start with UMPI in January and have decided to try to kill two birds with one stone in having a couple of the courses evaluated for professional licensing continuing education credits. I've submitted to my licensure body and they have requested more information on the courses. The most I can seem to find are single paragraph descriptions. Here's the courses and what i was able to find;

Bus 200 Intermediate Business Computing 3 credits. In-depth exploration of the advanced features of the Microsoft Office suite. Integration of spreadsheet and database information into reports and presentations and querying functions. Students lacking significant prior experience with business computing are advised to take Bus 125 or prior to enrolling in this class.

Bus 469 Strategic Professional Communication 3 credits. Prerequisite: Senior Status. Using business knowledge and analytical skills, students develop professional-level oral and written communication skills. Experiential learning exercises provide opportunities to develop strategic solutions to situations confronting a hypothetical organization.

I've looked around in the MaineStreet interface and haven't been able to find anything more detailed.  I was kind of hoping to find a syllabus similar to what Study.com provides that would give my licensing body enough information to make a determination.

I e-mailed Cody and CC'd Jessica yesterday but I'm guessing that they are winding down for the holidays and don't seriously expect a response until January. Am I missing some little nook or cranny where this information is hidden?

As always, thank you for any input. Have a happy holiday season.

BUS 200 required me to build out a technology infrastructure.

469 is probably going to be the hardest to PLA. This is kind of like the UMPI capstone. I don't even think they'll let you get credit for this one.

I'm guessing you get a syllabus at the start of a course. I've always received mine on the 1st day of class, at all 5 schools I've taken classes from. My daughter is a current student, and gets her syllabi the day before classes start at her school.
TESU BSBA/HR 2018 - WVNCC BOG AAS 2017 - GGU Cert in Mgmt 2000

Hello Ashkir.

I'm not seeking a prior learning assessment and I have every intention of taking both courses. My profession requires continuing education credits every year to keep up with licensing. It's a separate thing entirely from the university but I was hoping to tie them in for this situation. A lot of times I can go out to seminars for the credits but I figured that an actual university course is one step better. The government agency in my Province is willing to take a look at them, but they want more information.

Hope that makes more sense.

Drat. It may not work out then as I need to get approval prior to taking the course. It's the government so it will take a fair bit of time for them to evaluate it. I had considered using any of the other courses that I have already completed this past year that I have syllabus details for, but they are firm it being approved prior.

Here's hoping the school can send me something!!

Thanks for the input.

These descriptions are for the on campus courses not the YourPace courses. Your course work will be different. You will have access to the syllabus when the class begins. It will be in your class on the learning platform. They're not available outside of the classes.

I wouldn't PLA these courses. BUS200 was an easy case study paper and BUS469 was writing a handbook. PLA is sooooo much more work than the actual YourPace course.

You won't get the syllabus before the class begins. What you can do is sign up for a class at the beginning of the term and not start it right away. You have 8 weeks to complete the class so you can submit the syllabus to the government. You'll still need to complete the course, but being enrolled you'll have access to the syllabus. Syllabi are typically given when classes begin not a month in advance. Today is the last day of the semester for both YourPace and on campus so you will have a very hard time finding anyone. They will also have days off for the holidays. I'm an active student and have not been able to get a response from Cody this week on something I need an answer today about my last course.

Those aren't for YourPace courses.

Oh one other thing that may or may not be an issue for you. We don't have any textbooks in YourPace. All of our reading is built into the learning platform we use. No one other than students taking these courses has access to it except a few staff members. We also don't have access to ever course. We only have access to the courses we are enrolled in. So if the government requires some specific readings you won't be able to show them a list of texts on the syllabus. The syllabus can be pretty generic and mostly about UMPI policies more than what you'll cover in class.

These are the descriptions offered on the YourPace site for the online undergrad programs. I have no intention of doing a PLA, I want to do these courses and look forward to them. I appreciate the info on what to expect though Smile

Just as a follow-up, Jessica responded this evening at about 9 pm her time with the two detailed syllabus documents in pdf files.

I'm not extremely experienced with universities and don't have a lot to compare it to, but these guys have been top-notch to work with so far.

Happy holidays all and thanks to all who helped out!

Awesome idea emailing Jessica for the syllabus! She did give me the MAOL one before I signed up to look.

UMPI hiring a new dean / director has made their communication go up a lot. They have a lot more students now too.
