I feel well-versed in modern history and passed West Civ II no problem. I was nervous about West Civ I because it made me realized how little I knew about ancient civilization or really anything before the Middle Ages. I spent an a day reading the REA book and studied an additional two days re-reading and taking the practice exams. I felt I still had foggy knowledge between the rise of Christianity and the last of the Crusades (500s-1200s). However, like many other CLEPs and DSSTs I figured that if you knew the fundamentals well, you can pass. Come test day, a majority of the questions are general questions about ancient civilizations (What where the Egyptians known for, What was the Peloponnese League, ect.) and some soft hitters of the Reformation and the Hundred Years War. Walked out with a 60!
Don't be scared by all the dates and names. When I got to the question of the conquest of Constantinople I had to laugh. It is one of the few critical dates that historians stress to memorize (1453) and the test only wanted the century. Good luck to everyone taking this test. Relax, CLEPs and DSSTs are scaled. If you get half the questions right, you are doing good! |
