Straighterline or Sophia??
#1
Hi all! I need to take a college algebra class and I struggle so much in math, it is hard for me.  Is anyone familiar with that class at SL or Sophia and which one would you suggest?  Thanks!

Sophia is super fast and easy. It's open book. Not proctored. It's self-paced but you have 60 days to complete the class. Even if you struggle with math, you should finish it much more quickly.

Some students who have struggled with math say that they found Sophia's statistics even easier than algebra. Sophia's statistics is less about actual math and more about theories. But you need to watch the videos provided for everything to make sense.

StraighterLine has a fully proctored exam and I'm not sure that it's open book (it might be). I would not recommend SL for someone who struggles with math.

If you're trying to get a degree at TESU or Excelsior, I would suggest CSM Learn over either Sophia or SL. CSM Learn also satisfies the math requirements for a handful of other schools (it's only lib arts at Charter Oak, though). https://www.csmlearn.com/product/ACEcredit

In order of preference, I would say that SL would be the last resort. Sophia Algebra or Statistics (give both a try to see which works better for you) would be in the middle. CSM Learn would be the best, if that's an option.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

Sophia has Fundamentals of College Algebra. It is not worth credit but I suggest starting with that one to refresh and review your math skills. Then move to college algebra.

Sophia is super easy, and anyone should be able to pass it.  Be aware that you will be hit with math again when you take the SOS 110 (Critical Information Literacy.)  SOS 110 isn't much algebra, but it is more math.  This course is required to take for graduation from TESU.  So, if you want to learn some things and not just finish a course quickly, then you may want to take a different course.

rachel83az is a big math person so she knows a lot about math courses, and she has taken a lot of them.  She knows what she is talking about.

CSM Learn is a site that offers a single ACE-recommended course. At some schools, it can be used instead of algebra. At other schools, it comes in as an elective of some kind. At TESU or Excelsior, it can be used instead of algebra. It's more of a logic/reasoning course than pure math. I won't say that it's easy, if you have issues with math, but it can be much easier than actual algebra.

If you just need any old credit, then Sophia is fine.  If you actually need to know the math, I'd recommend using Khan Academy (free).  You can start as easy as you'd like and move on through as fast as you want.  There are videos which I find very helpful.

Sophia leapfrogged StraighterLine and Study.com to be my favorite provider of lower level credits when they changed their pricing model around, it was third on my list as cost was a big factor. For Lower Level, I used to recommend StraighterLine but now recommend Sophia.org, however - having said that, you should use Study.com for a majority of your upper level credits...

I'd also add schoolyourself as a great resource for learning math. They didn't make nearly as many lessons as khan, but they're great for algebra.
