I'm not sure if it's new. I started SL last month and I took the course 2 weeks ago. Basically, they ask you a question like "What theory of social structure do you find most interesting?" They want a short paragraph that you then submit to turn-it-in. Each one is only worth 20 points (or 2% of your grade) and I believe it is pass or fail (satisfactory or unsatisfactory).
