Straighterline New Organizational Behavior = Upper level at TESC??
#1
I think the DSST Organizational Behavior is upper level credit (PSY-361-DE??) at TESC. Does anyone know if the new Straighterline Organizational Behavior course will also be taken by TESC as upper level?

By looking at the catalog, Organizational Behavior is upper level. I'm just going to take the chance and take it. Don't go by me though.. :/

You can always ask and have them plan it in.

Searching Organizational Behavior on the TESC PLA search page (which shows every course in the system) comes up with these as possible matches:

Organizational Behavior (HRM-311) 3.00 s.h.*
Introduction to the behavior of modern complex organizations. Topics include: organization goals, processes, and procedures; the role of technology in manpower management; the individual and the organization; motivation, communications and group dynamics; leadership, authority, power, and influence; and the structure of work groups.

Organizational Behavior (MAN-311) 3.00 s.h.*
Examination of individual behavior within an organizational setting. Examines the relationship of an individual and his/her personality, perceptions, motivation with the tasks assigned, groups interacted with, management and the dynamics of the organization. This subject may be classified as either social sciences (PSY-361) or business (MAN-311) depending on the degree program.

Organizational Theory & Behavioral (ORG-500) 6.00 s.h.*
This course acknowledges families, tribes, Nation-states, clubs, clans and a variety of organizations which peoples have devised to accomplish shared purposes, then quickly focuses on hierarchies, the dominant form of today's business, government and not-for-profit organizations. The purpose of the course is two-fold: 1) to make organizations and their behaviors more transparent and predictable, and hence, more manageable, by providing students with the means to interpret and influence their structures and actions and 2) to introduce students to several topics which recur in subsequent courses, including leadership, the nature of power and authority in organizations, strategic thinking and planning, information and control systems, and the influence of the external environment on organizational behavior and performance. With a strong emphasis on the practice of management, the course examines sets of theories developed to explain a wide span of behaviors, from the motivation and behavior of the individual and issues of interpersonal conflict, through the structure and operations of trans-global organizations with thousands of employees. Specific topics, illustrated through case studies, include motivation, diversity, formal and informal groups, leadership, culture and ethics, communication, organization structure, power and politics, and innovation. In its presentation, the course views the organization as a set of interacting systems: functional, social, political, and informational, mediated by the norms and values of the organization's cultural systems. These systems, in turn, are influenced by the economic, political, technological and social forces of an organization's external environment. Students are urged to use the subject matter of the Organizational Theory and Behavior course as an opportunity to begin planning for their Thesis/Applied project (TAP). The course presents numerous issues and problems that could become the focus of students' TAP research.

Organizational Behavior (PSY-361) 3.00 s.h.*
Examines the main aspects of an individual's behavior within an organizational setting. Advisory: This examination may be classified as either business (MAN-311-TE) or social science, depending on the student's degree program.

Obviously it won't be the masters level course (ORG-500) so I'd guess PSY-361 or MAN-311. As it says, "This examination [referring to the DSST] may be classified as either business (MAN-311-TE) or social science, depending on the student's degree program."

I'd warn everyone to check on the Straighterline course because of one thing, the ACE recommendation for the new Straighterline course is:
Credit Recommendation: In the lower-division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in business (8/12).
*Source ACE CREDIT | The National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training click on Organizational Behavior for the details.

With a generic ACE recommendation the best plan would be to ask ahead and have them plan it in. The biggest problem may come from that recommendation or that Straighterline numbers it as BUS120 (100 [lower] level). Pick the course code that matches what you need (PSY, MAN, or HRM) and ask them to plan it in. Since they don't appear to have a matching course at a 100/200 level I'd expect them to allow it without any issue. If it is not accepted for what you believe to be a match you should always challenge the decision. While they don't always agree, you might get someone higher up to accept your idea if you explain your reasoning. Since I took the DSST route I of course will also recommend people to take the exam and just be done right away.

Anyone with courses that don't line up should speak with an advisor and consider filing an appeal if they still believe they are wrong. It isn't always an exact science to match courses and you'd be surprised what they can change if you only ask. Here is TESC's policy on appeals:

Appeals
Students may appeal an academic decision. Such appeals must be filed within 30 days of the date of the notification of that decision. All appeals must be submitted in writing to the dean of the School in which the student is enrolled. Note that many academic decisions do not require a formal appeal. Students may begin by submitting a statement of why they believe the decision to be in error, including such supporting materials as course descriptions or syllabi, to the Advisement Center.
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

Good summing it up Cooper Alex.

I also want to note, that some of my Penn Foster courses that specified "Credit Recommendation: In the lower-division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Criminal Justice" in the ACE registry were applied as upper level in some categories even though ACE had it for lower-division credit.

I'm going to try, I will be finished with the course in the next couple of days. I'll try to keep updated and let you know what TESC decides.

I saw the ACE listing for Straighterline's Org. Behavior and that is why I asked my question. The DSST Org. Behavior exam is listed as lower level on ACE as well but TESC gives upper level credit for it.

Do you just tell TESC to put PSY-361 on your evaluation or do you also need to tell them it will be coming from Straighterline?

Tell them where it is coming from, then wait for them to plan it in and tell you what it is good for. I'd be surprised if it weren't the same as the DSST. Give them the first move and then suggest a better match if you don't agree.

I asked for the official word on Straighterline's Business Ethics and Organizational Behavior from TESC and this is what I got. I thought I would share for anyone else wondering.

"The Straighterline courses, Organizational Behavior and Business Ethics, will transfer over as MAN-311 and PHI-384, respectively."

Does anyone have the McGraw Hill Interactive Quiz link for the textbook for this class?

McShane, Steven L. and Mary Ann Von Glinow. Organizational Behavior, 4th edition, McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2008, ISBN: 9780073049779

I've found these helpful in studying for SL courses. Thanks.
