Straighterline -> FHSU -> Excelsior
#1
hi all,

to make a long story less long, my plan is to finish off my degree at excelsior (business - finance concentration). now after researching, i've decided i want to take as many courses that transfer grades (not pass/fail). my thinking is that this may help (or alternatively kill my chances) of getting into a particular masters program that requires higher grades.

another issue is because there aren't any clep test centres where i reside (toronto, canada), i'm trying to eliminate as many cleps as i can but it still looks like i'll need to make a trip to buffalo once or twice in the near future. this is leading me to choose (preferably) graded dsst exams and maybe one or two uexcel exams over cleps.

i've also read about straighterline so i'm thinking about taking as many courses as i can thrpugh them (aleks is another option but they only transfer as pass/fail and not grades). to be efficient in time and money, i'd only take straighterline courses that are accepted by fhsu (because these courses will be graded and then i will be able to transfer them to excelsior - or so my research has indicated).

anyway, does anyone out there know exactly which straighterline courses fhsu accepts? and what those fshu credits would transfer to excelsior as? the straighterline site lists more courses than what's listed under their transfer credit page so i'm not sure if i'm understanding this correctly. the courses they offer and transfer to fshu are:

college algebra = fshu MAT110 = exclesior? (does this satisfy the math requirement?)
accounting I = fshu ACCT203 = excelsior?
accounting II = fshu ACCT204 = excelsior? (is this managerial accounting?)
business stats = fshu * (that's what the website says) = excelsior? (does this satisfy the stats requirement?)
developmental writing = fshu? (no indication on the website) = excelsior?
english comp I = fshu (credit cannot transfer according to website) = excelsior?
english comp II = fshu ENC1102 = excelsior? (does this satisfy WER?)
eco I: macroeconomics = fshu? (no indication on website) = excelsior? (does this satisfy macro?)
eco II: microeconomics = fshu? (no indication on website) = excelsior? (does this satisfy micro?)
intro to algebra = fshu? (no indication on website) = excelsior? (does this satisfy math requirement)
precalculus = fshu? (no indication on website) = excelsior? (does this satisfy math requirement?)

i'm hoping those who have actually transferred their credits over to excelsior can shed some light on what courses i should/must/shouldn't/could take at straighterline.

thanks!

Welcome...
Have you done a 'search' of the forums?
There is plenty of feedback about the courses EC accepts through Straighterline via FH

Sorry, I can't help with most of your questions, but I did want to say...

They seem to be continuing to refresh the DSST exams (meaning no grade given for the new versions). Be sure to put the old versions early in your study plan if you want a grade.

You are using a different strategy than a lot of us. I am looking forward to following your progress.

hi and thank you all!

tasman - i think i've become a search king! i've read pretty much every thread with sl, ec, fshu, straighterline, exclesior...etc.
the problem is some threads are quite old so i wanted to see if anyone had more updated experiences out there.

nap - thanks for the heads up! "different strategy"? how so? by grades you mean? i was thinking that more grades (on the big assumption that i do well) would help more than a majority of just "pass" marks. of course we all know what happens to one when they assume...please let me know if i am incorrect in this thinking.

creationstory - thanks, it didn't even occur to me to see what the other schools' policies were. i'll contact them/do some searching to find out more.

great place you got here!

Yes, that is what I meant. Your looking for only graded options will make a different looking degree plan than others have chosen.

Since you know that you need the grades for the requirements of a specific graduate school, that is a good reason to see what is available. (If that strategy doesn't work, I have read on the forum that there are other ways to get into grad school, maybe even the grad school of your choice.)

Welcome to the forum! This is a wonderful place!

As of today FHSU will give graded credit for only Acct I&II, Macro, Micro and College Algebra. Lake City gives only pass and fail, the same as ACE. The newest addition JC&TC, gives credit for all of the courses, but I haven't yet received an answer as to whether the credit is graded or pass fail. When I do, I'll post.

Andrew from SL just confirmed that the SL courses that JC&TC accepts will not receive grades.
