I recently completed the SL statistics course. I purchased the previous edition of the recommended textbook. In hindsight, this might not have been the best decision. The practice problems suggested by Straighterline did not appear in my text.
The course started out great. I studied the on-line lessons leading to the first exam. I worked through SL's puzzles and matching games to anchor the concepts and terminology. I took the first exam and only missed a couple of questions. I had the same results with the second exam. At this point, I felt very comfortable. I took my time with each SL lesson/chapter. Despite this, my scores steadily declined with each exam. I dragged my claws down a long, slippery slope and finished with 69%. I took it again for a pass but I'll talk about that later. This is what I feel, the exam questions were not created specifically for the Straighterline course OR from the material in the textbook. It is statistics so a good portion correlates (bah-haha) by nature; however, a selection of harmless looking questions were bottomless pits of frustration. Even after consulting the textbook, I came up blank. These particular questions looked simple but their specifics took them off the map of the provided and recommended study materials. Many questions felt like giveaways and only a few (est. 1/6) required performing an actual calculation. I decided to retake the course. Straighterline averages the final scores. I had 69% so I needed 71% to pass. The second time around I scored low on the exams (completely different questions) that I had previously scored high on and vice versa. It became apparent that I could either ace or fail these exams on any given day. I proceeded with reckless abandon and knocked out 71.25%. Good enough for a pass. I hope I am not alone.

I can guarantee you that straighterline biz comm and accounting I&II do not require the latest edition of the text. Maybe stats is an example of one that does. Either way, its nice to be able to retake a course for $39 isn't it?

I am not sure how useful the recommended edition would be overall against previous editions. All I do know is that the suggested practice exercises did not exist in my textbook (sixth edition). If they were there, they were not on the same page or correspond with the same numbers as directed by Straighterline. Having said that, I don't know what advantage those specific practice exercises would have been.
Generally, I felt that the exam test bank and the course itself were created independently. This was not a problem for many questions. Statistics is statistics. I studied material that never appeared on the exams and some of the exam material I had never seen before. Though, much of it lined up perfectly.
