Masters Degree by Thesis/Research
#1
Hi,

I am interested in doing a masters degree by thesis or research and by distance. I know a couple of schools offer this, but I am looking preferably for a European school because I am a EU citizen and that usually means free or heavily discounted degree. I am looking to study one of the following:

Masters in Public or Global Health
Masters in Mass Media
Masters in Business Administration/Management

I know the following schools offer it:

Charles Sturt University in Australia
University of South Africa

A particular note about "business administration:" By academic convention, the "Master of Business Administration" hopscotches across several areas of knowledge in discrete courses: finance, accounting, marketing, etc.

Although you could design a research project that addressed all these subject areas, would your supervisor be qualified as a professor of finance, accounting, marketing, etc.? Or would the university strike a large committee of supervisors each of whom would pull your project in whatever direction to reflect proficiency in each discipline?

Probably not. This is why I'd be surprised if an MBA by thesis or research exists in the EU, Australia, South Africa, etc. I'd guess the best chance of finding one would be from a country less bound by the academic traditions of the English-speaking countries and Western Europe: in the Eastern EU, or in Russia, or somewhere farther afield internationally.

Change the subject title from business administration to "management" (which you have as an option above), "leadership," "strategic planning," etc., though, and you're no longer tied to the multi-subject MBA paradigm. So you'd probably have better luck in that search.

I would like to study ONE of those subjects not all of them as one major.

Then, expect a research degree to have a title like "MSc" [in, e.g., Marketing], not "MBA."

I am completely fine with that Smile

I will do a MBA in the USA at a later date. I think I will be pursuing a MSc in Public Health.
