Spring 1 Session 2 -- What is YOURPace?
#31
Finished HUM 103 earlier this week, which was the only general education course I needed. Only have the final left on a second class, and it's a paper rather than a PowerPoint, so that should be pretty smooth sailing.

After that's done, I have only a 6-credit independent study to complete to be finished. I've been doing research on that for a couple weeks, since I knew the subject and what material I needed, but will do another week or two of research and then get to work on a 5,000 word project. When that's done, I'll technically be finished (that is, all degree requirements will be fulfilled), but if I have time afterwards, I may add a class or two for fun. Now that I'm not feeling the pressure I did last session, self-imposed, apparently, since I'll probably be done with time to kill this session, I'm enjoying myself much more.

Just curious, which competency has a 5,000 word project? (or is this not at UMPI?)

It is at UMPI, but it's a 6-credit independent study course rather than one of the actual competencies, hence the length.

What independent study are you doing instead of classes? Is it less work than the classes? Which degree are you going for?

Doing History & Political Science. Professor Sebold received a grant for a project that involves writing local histories that will be used by junior high school teachers. I am researching and writing a 5,000-word piece that will be part of the project. I don't think that it's less work than a standard course, and certainly not less work than the easier courses (I've already read a couple books and dozens of newspaper articles as research, plus searched a lot of public records), but it's more fun, in that it involves primary-source research and the puzzle aspect of putting together a story from multiple, sometimes contradictory, pieces.

That sounds like a fantastic project for a History Buff!  Enjoy.  Smile

That sounds pretty cool! Will you be credited in the project? This could be your first published piece!

Yes, the other pieces I've read have been bylined. It'll be great to have a credited work of original historical research to point to.

It sounded like it could be a more long-form course, especially if you have not already completed a project that applies to the course. I really don't think there is enough time left in the session for it.

I completed BUS400 in 4 days and BUS401 in 2 days. You don't need to use a project you're currently involved in. You create a project plan using the template you create in BUS141. It's not a long course at all. Any project can be used.
