Geography Anyone?
#1
Greetings degree seekers!

Looking for an Intro to Geography course for my freshman son and I was looking for reviews from the usual suspects. I checked out Saylor's real quick and it seemed pretty multi-faceted and well put together, but I was hoping to hear from someone who actually took it.

DSST - If so, how to study?

SDC has "Geography 101: Human & Cultural Geography"

I'm not sure that I would suggest Saylor for a non-adult.

CLEP (ModernStates) has Social Sciences & History - this does cover at least some geography.

Study guide for the DSST: http://www.free-clep-prep.com/Human-Cult...-DSST.html
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

I definitely do NOT suggest Saylor for anyone, but especially not for a young person.  It is a ton of reading with very little direction toward passing an exam.  Several of the courses were taken by my kids, but they were not easy, and a lot of studying had to be done to prepare.

CLEP would be a tad difficult, but you would get 6 credits out of it.  CLEP would be free if you studied through Modern States, and they now give the option to be able to take the exam at home.  I would also suggest this resource to help aid in studying.  It has some practice exams that are extremely helpful.  Three of my kids took this exam, and while they studied a lot, it was easily passed. LINK REMOVED  You only need a score of a 50, but the highest score is an 80 so it is actually a scaled score.

My best suggestion would be SDC.  The videos are excellent, and the exams are very fair.  The price includes 2 college courses, and if you are new to SDC shoot me a message, and I can send you a discount.  Someone on here sent me one.

Just a reminder that most colleges require those pesky regional credits that are much easier to attain in the lower level courses at a community college.  Just save some room someplace for those lower level credits too.

Thanks for your feedback and personal experiences. I def have heard the poor feedback about Saylor throughout the forum, lol. I must say, I started the Geography lesson one and found it more interactive than I expected. The CLEP def is a sound investment for MUCHO credits that we will keep on our radar. Not looking for "hard" too early (he is 13 and new to this) and a 6 credit course is going to have a certain degree of "hard". I am very familiar with SDC, having taken a few courses there myself. I don't like the 100+ lessons and mandatory quizzes in addition to the midterm and final. We will go there for a few of the shorter courses like History of Vietnam, Presentation Skills and Civil War later. Trying not to spend the big bucks yet.

I hear the DSST is particularly difficult and must be taken at a center, so we will stay away from that one.

I will have him start the Saylor module for now and see how it goes since it's FREE and strictly about Geography. If it stinks, we will let it go and try another route. I read on a FB thread, one kid enjoyed it so there is hope.

The CLEP isn't Geography alone, it's mixed content and a steeper gradient. We'll see how this goes. He jumped in and started with a big smile, so we'll see. I promise to report back!
