Social Sciences and History CLEP advice
#1
I have recently taken US History 1 and 2 and American Gov. I want to take the SS and H test. It is such a broad test and I am at a loss of what to study. I took half of a Peterson's practice test and got a 48. I hope that means I am pretty close to being ready. Any advice on what I need to study the most? I don't know anything about Physiology and I really struggle with world history.

Thanks for your time...have a blessed day!

Although it's true that this is a broad test (I was majorly overwhelmed when I began to study for it), you have a good foundation to work with. If you've taken the Psychology or Sociology CLEPs, that will help a lot, too. Personally, I waited to take this test until near the end of my CLEPs; you may want to consider re-arranging your remaining tests until you have taken some more that will overlap this one (unless, of course, this is your last one). It will make studying for and taking this test a lot less scary! I don't remember many, if any, questions on Physiology, so don't stress out about that. I posted resources, thoughts, and things to know near the top of this post ----> http://www.degreeforum.net/excelsior-tho...post136711

You're about half way there - it's helpful to complete both Western Civs, Sociology and Psychology. There are about 15 questions on Economics so a basic understanding of that subject is helpful.
I agree with Lady Grace, schedule this test after you have passed or at least studied the above subjects. This test is interesting in the topics are not intermixed - (example: US History question followed by a Sociology question followed by an Economics question followed by a Western Civ. question) It's like taking 5+ different tests at one time. The information required is more general than specific, so study the highlights for each subject.
TESC gives 6 credits for this test, so this is one great test!
Good luck.

Well this is my second to last test. All I have left is SS and H and Humanities. I am at a loss of what to study! Do you think I should study world history, physiology and sociology? That is an awful lot to study for one test!

Since that is the case, I'd suggest getting a good book like REA that covers the other topics well. Your background will give you a good start. I was in the same position for this test.

Personally, I would go for Western Civ., psychology, and a touch of economics. The geography section was pretty simple for this test, too.

The REA gave a great overview of the topics to know. I'd taken the Western Civ CLEPs several months earlier so I was rather foggy on that info, but I studied it up in the REA and some online, and that was enough. The Psychology, Sociology, and Economics covered were rather basic and covered well by REA. Do you have Princeton's Cracking the Clep book? That was excellent as well.

Here's the feedback I wrote after passing this test:

Quote:Just passed this test with 71! Thank you, Jesus!

*Previous tests taken:
Western Civ 1&2
US History 1&2
Intro Sociology
American Government
(in that order)

* I studied about 1 & 1/2 weeks for this test

*Practice test scores:
REA—69%, 74&
Petersons—63%, 68% (I didn’t take the 3rd Petersons, but just studied it)
Cracking the Clep—81%
OCSG—81% (TAKE AND REVIEW THIS!!!!! There was a CLEP question that I would’ve had NO IDEA about if I hadn’t taken this test. Because I did, I knew the answer in a snap!)

*Observations:

Yes, the test is arranged by section!

My test had about 40 Q’s on US History, with chunks of government thrown in (I took these tests most recently & was most comfortable with this section)
~20 Q’s on Western Civ/World History (took WC 1&2 early this year, so it was a little more fuzzy, but this section of the test was not too bad)
~20 Q’s on Economics (some was not too hard to get, made some educated guesses, and just flat-out guessed for others)
~10-12 Q’s on Geography/Anthropology (not hard)
~30 Q’s on Sociology with a little Psychology (for me, the Sociology was very easy & basic)
