Cheapest Online Spanish Courses
#1
Hey guys! Long time no see! I've been keeping my head down and knocking out my last few classes for my BA.

As my title might suggest, I'm looking for cheap Spanish courses. I'm planning to take 1&2 at NMJC at some point to get the most bang for my buck. I would still need 3&4, though, and NMJC doesn't offer those. Any suggestions?

Right now the cheapest I could find was U of Idaho IS. Those two classes would cost me $1150 ($100 per credit x 8 + $25 admin. fee x 2 + $25 proctor x 12). Right now that beats local universities in my area for in-state tuition, but I thought I would check to see if I maybe missed something. What I really need is a free proctor service. That would cut down the cost by $300. But until I find one of those, I place my financial fate in your hands.

Any suggestions?

If you are a veteran, you can pay $57 per credit for Spanish I & II at Colorado Mountain College.

For online it's $215 per credit x 8 = $1720. You're right, it would be amazing if I were in Maricopa County or WUE. Louisiana misses out on all the good deals. It's almost tempting to not have to bother with a proctor. To be honest, I'm surprised a community college offers it. And a nice flexible choice between 8 or 14 week classes. I'll have to keep that one on the back-burner if I can't find in-state online courses. I think that pricing is comparable. Just checked, that beats anything my state offers by $1-200. Thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately, I'm not a veteran, otherwise that would be a viable option. NMJC is $62 per credit OOS for those two courses, so I think I'm as low as I can get for those. It's 201 and 202 I'm more concerned with. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I did see LSU IS offered 201 and 202, but their 201 was on hold, whatever that means. $559 + $25 proctor x 2 = $609 That's a good price on par with U of Idaho with less proctor hoops to jump through, but it says on the site that they do not know when 201 will be off of hold.

U of Idaho may be my best bet, but the 12 proctored exams is really turning me off. I have a hard time scheduling blocks of time around my work schedule. High employee turnover. I don't know. Still open to other suggestions if anyone has any.

See if university of Arkansas ind. studies or BYU have anything. I believe Arkansas used to have quite a few.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

If you're interested in test-out options, How To Learn Spanish > Best Way To Learn Spanish For Beginners > SpanishHour is a great resource for prepping for the CLEP Spanish exam for 12 hours of credit.

Also, the University of Arkansas offers 18 hours of credit in various Spanish classes through their self-paced courses.

Good luck!

I know this is a discussion about cost, but it is just begging for a discussion on what's easiest. Easiness is related to probability of success which is related to cost. Midland College has a reputation for being easy.

Good luck!

I think we have a winner. U of Arkansas has both of the courses I need. $155 per credit x 6 + $8 proctored test x 8 = $1002

I have no idea why their proctored exams are so cheap, but I'll take 8 over 12 and $148 in my pocket any day. Thanks a lot for the suggestions, you guys.

ETA: The reason I am not pursuing CBE for those courses is a combination of grad. schools not accepting them and needing to bolster my undergrad GPA. Otherwise, that would have been the cheaper, easier option.

If it were anything other than a foreign language, I would say it doesn't matter. But being as it is, I would not mind having that discussion. I'm not very proficient with languages. This is just to fulfill MA/MFA requirements.

Tuition looks like it is $514 for 3 hours OOS. They have the two classes I need, but I can't find syllabus information for the online courses. I will call them Monday to see if I can get any info. on proctoring requirements. If they are easier courses, then I wouldn't mind the extra money. I will post back with any info. I get. Hopefully, their reputation holds up. I just need to get these four classes under my belt and move on with my life, you know?
