School name changes

If you attended a school that changed its name while you were attending, does the credits you earned while the school had its former name make such a different organization? For example, I attended a school that was a community college for a while, which later became a state college (I attended during the process of the name change), as in Florida many community colleges became state colleges due to overpopulating at the state universities, does the credits I earned while it was a community college make the credits I earned while it was a state college split into different paradigms?

I noticed on my Excelsior transcript they are projecting such credits as if I attended two different schools. Is this logical? I'm trying to figure out if this is something I need to bring to their attention as I have to the 3rd of Jan to correct any errors before my conferral.

Assuming that you're talking about FSCJ (formerly FCCJ), I would list all of my classes as being from FSCJ. It's the same institution - the only real difference is the new name and that they started adding B.S. and B.A.S. degrees at that time.

You may need to contact your new college to get this ironed out.

Yup, the advisors at EC are so backwards they are treating my credits as if its two different schools based on the name change from FCCJ to FSCJ.

I agree you should contact the originating college for clarity. I wonder if on the transcript they are listing credits separately, past as FCCJ and more recent as FSCJ?

Contact the registrar, let them know how Excelsior is interpreting and evaluating the credit. Ask if it is the school policy to separate the awarded credit as 2yr (FCCJ) / 4yr (FSCJ) depending upon when courses were taken? The answer will determine whether you need order a revised transcript sent electronically to Excelsior for evaluation. If you order a transcript, I would also request an offiical copy sent to your home to confirm how the information is now recorded.

I wonder, if all credits are now listed as originating from a 4yr institution (vs a 2yr), would TESC possibly evaluate the 2yr LL course(s) with the title/description of their own UL course(s) as UL credit? For example, abnormal psychology or social psychology would transfer as 300 level credit (ie PSY350 and PSY370).

Could you please post the definitive answer from your college? The information could prove extremely valuable to Floridian TESC students. And anyone else, if tthe school accepts non-enrolled students taking OL courses to transfer elsewhere. Depending on tuition fees for non-enrolled students, this could be a great find if seeking UL credit .

Not sure if TESC would have a similar policy, but at COSC you can only get LL credit from a community college. Having them listed under different names might be part of that type of policy.

I know when I applied to COSC, Liberty University, and when I attended Morehouse College they treated all my credits as if I attended a 4 year state school, initially under one name, which is the new name of the school. Excelsior is transcribing it as two different schools. Since its more of an Excelsior issue I have escalated it to the dean of the department, as my advisor just seems to not care.

Thank you for clarifying how the courses are presented on the official transcript. Good idea escalating the issue, the advisor is obviously not well trained. I'm actually surprised an advisor is the one handling this matter. Does Excelsior not have an evaluations team/department?


Well if that's the case, TESC would most likely follow suit. This would be an amazing opportunity for students to have certain courses transferred as upper level credit. As long as the credits are from a 4yr institution, TESC has been known to evaluate courses by title/description regardless of how it's recorded on originating transcript. This policy is one of the reasons I love TESC; well, the main reason is the school is located in my home state but I also appreciate the added perks.;-)

your credits, accreditation, and school name will always be from when you completed them - not the current situation of the school. If you attended a CC, your credits will be CC credit- no matter what the school is now. In your case, the change will be listed as attending 2 schools because technically speaking, you did attend 2 schools.

This is to your advantage if a school closes/loses accreditation because you're credits will be valid since they held it at the time of completion.

In the reverse situation, a school that GAINS accreditation does not back-date your credits to be accredited. An example in my sig is my culinary degree. That was an NA college when I earned it, but they earned RA in the mid 90's. Whenever I send my transcript, 99.99% of the time, they recognize my credit as RA because their initial search shows that as being an RA school. Of course, after they catch up (which they always do) they "demote" that credit back to NA status.

Your 4 year credit should independently retain that status, while your CC credit should independently retain that status.

If a school changes names, there's nothing disingenuous about listing the previously earned credential from it using the new name. Some schools even offer to send replacement diplomas to keep their alumni from having to sort out any confusion.

It's interesting that no one mentioned USNY --> Regents College --> Excelsior in this thread. It's always been USNY for me.
