Research on For-Profit Colleges

Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom is a sociology professor who has worked at for-profit and not-for-profit colleges. She's studied how for-profit colleges differ from other colleges.

And I'll be damned. Just 1:36 into the first video, a zoomed in shot of her old rep card was shown. But it wasn't just of any old school, nope, it was, OF COURSE, ITT Technical Institute!

ITT Technical Institute was considered a good school for a long period of time.  Then they rapidly expanded and got into trouble with federal loan programs.

Their model like the University of Phoenix was just to max out student loans from students and strap them with a lot of debt.  Then a lot of them couldn't repay the loan and thus their delinquency rate went too high.

I would trust for profit to create something of value for society before I would trust the government.  The government and these public schools want to teach you to be a victim, socialist, political activist, along with critical race theory all of which do nothing to help you get ahead in life.

A North Korean defector described her experience at an ivy league college Columbia University as more insane than living in North Korea.

I'm aware, but I posted that because every time for-profit issues are mentioned, somehow, someway, ITT gets weaved into the conversation. Almost never fails.

Considering the impact of ITT, it'd be pretty irresponsible to ignore them in conversation specifically related to them.

(i meant as in this research or in an article --- us on a personal level don't have to care about them at all, or course.)

Of course it's expected that if something is about ITT or a person has experience with them and is applying that experience to their presentation then ITT would be mentioned, but I'm speaking in a broader sense than just this video, in situations where ITT doesn't need to be mentioned and adding it doesn't contribute anything useful. I'm not saying what she did is wrong here, I'm saying it's more proof of the prevalence of that example being used. Same can be said for University of Phoenix or DeVry, and the problem with these few examples being constantly used is that it gives the public the idea this is the standard way all for-profit schools behave and operate even though that's not true. Without it being balanced that in itself has become irresponsible.

With the for-profit sector being as bad as the doomsayers claim, one would think they would have a lot more examples in the numerous articles (which are usually just hit pieces) that are written.

That's interesting because 2-year for-profit colleges have worse job outcomes than community colleges. I have many degrees in many different subjects from several different colleges. I have taken classes at maybe over a dozen colleges. Never have I been taught critical race theory, except the term was mentioned in passing in a doctoral-level law class. CRT is taught in law school. It's become another dumb bogeyman for politicians to use to scare their dumb, racist constituents.

It was a huge operation; many people have worked there. I believe she also worked at a second for-profit college. I worked at a smaller for-profit college that was almost as bad as ITT and worse than University of Phoenix. I would argue that Devry and University of Phoenix aren't even the worst. Capella and Walden's doctoral students carry six-figure debt, and for-profit trade schools have the same low graduation rates as CCs, but they are five to 10 times more expensive.

Regardless, her presentations are mostly based on research and not her personal experiences.
