Excelsior evolved out of Regents College. What were the good points of the
old model, was it a diploma mill? You used to credit bank and then when you
reached the number of credits the state department of education issued a
degree. Do they still do it today , is there a similar setup up in other states?
Both have their good and not so good points depending on your needs and
feelings.

I graduated from Excelsior in 1988 when it was the University of the State of New York. It was also regionally accredited then. NOT a diploma mill! They also insisted on a variety of courses then - basically the general education requirement etc. From what I can see there have only been small changes from what exists now.

A couple of changes come to mind along with the name change. First, they used to grant the whole 30 credits for a major for just passing a GRE, now one gets a sliding scale of credits and must get over the 80th percentile to get the whole 30.
Second, there was a time when the Associate nursing degrees were open to everyone, now you have to be a licensed LPN, Paramedic, Resp. Therapist, P.A. etc. to get in the program.

Does anyone know why Regents decided to become a private college?

Perhaps change of state government from govenor Cuomo to Pataki had
a bearing.....never the less when I look at prices of college tuition Excelsior is
the only option for me and a good fit. The fact they are a now a title 4 school
which allows you grants @ scholarships is a new benefit. No other school allows you the liberty to tailor make your courses.
