RANT! Brick and Morter Colleges

:mad: I hate B&M schools! I specifically asked the school I planned on transferring to (for my nursing degree) if they accepted CLEP's and they told me that they would take 18 units.
Now that I am actually transferring there (The policy hasn't changed; it has only been 3 months) they will only accept my humanities CLEP. I tried throwing a tizzy fit about it but they are standing behind their stupid councilors who don't even know the schools policy.
My only choices at this point are to take the classes (BLEGH) or pay to go to the outrageously expensive Maric college (40K) which really isn't an option. I am so frustrated!!!!

Can you send a letter to the Dean's office, or the president of the college, expressing your frustration & showing them the school's policy?? And also...did you get it in writing that they would accept the 18 credits?

I'm confused... What is the policy? Is it that what they are saying now is correct and that you were misinformed or is it that they are incorrect now (against their policy) and that you were initially informed correctly?

I'm having this hassle with Grossmont; my local community college.
I spoke with two separate councilors (my bad) and asked the information. I was told that they accept 18 units, but I was not told of any restrictions. I live an hour away from the college so I didn't go in before I took the exams. I didn't get it in writing (my double bad). The policy is correct that they only accept 6 specific Clep exams. The only one that can transfer for me is Humanities.
I wish that EC was an option for me, but to transfer into their nursing program you need to have at least half of your clinicals done. I was going to be on the waiting list with the help of the Clep's I took, but now I can't even do that.


This is their "official policy":

Grossmont College awards credit for CLEP examinations in accordance with the policy listed below. Students are cautioned that CLEP policies vary among colleges in both the number of units awarded and acceptable scores for receiving credit. Students intending to transfer should check with the Grossmont College Counseling Office or Transfer Center or the transferring institution to determine their policy.

CLEP General Education
A student may earn a maximum of 18 units on the general
examinations of CLEP. Credits received under CLEP are
applicable to appropriate general education requirements
for the Associate in Arts degree and the Associate in
Science degree. Credit will be awarded in the following
manner:
English Composition with Essay
Minimum score: 50 or 500 Units granted: 3
Humanities
Minimum score: 45 or 450 Units granted: Maximum of 6
Mathematics
Minimum score: 50 or 500 Units granted: 3
Natural Sciences
Minimum score: 45 or 450 Units granted: 3
Social Sciences and History and
U.S. History and Government
Minimum score: 45 or 450 Units granted: Maximum of 6

Sorry to hear about your ordeal, Alina. That has got to be extremely frustrating. Do you have any other options right now that you can think of?

This may be asking the obvious, but could you take another one or two general clep exams? It looks like they are more liberal about accepting those. Just a thought.

Wow, that last statement leaves a lot of wiggle room.

I asked about that because at my community college, they are VERY strict as to the requirements for anything medical, but relatively flexible with any other program. What I was wondering was if the counselor answered your question assuming that you were a "general education" student rather than a "Career component" student.

I've tried being the squeaky wheel that gets the grease at my CC about similar matters (Excelsior College exams), but they were totally inflexible when it comes to their medical programs. You might be doomed as well. I think the only thing that may help is if you found other colleges from whom they accept transfer credit that ALSO accept your CLEPs and make the case that they should accept yours as well (as if you were transferring credit from them). It probably won't work, but it may be worth a shot. Or you may want to look into a credit banking service (TESC and Excelsior offer this). If another college's reputation is on the hook for it, in that you are essentially "transferring" the credit, that may be a solution they would feel better about accepting.

As for not getting it in writing: you can hardly take any blame for that. You don't expect that when a counselor tells you something you'll have to prove later that they said it. :-P

Oh, should add that I seriously doubt that they'll bend on biology no matter what, but it's possible that they would for sociology and psychology. They usually want labs with the hard sciences.

I think you have a legitimate beef with them. It states "A student may earn a maximum of 18 units on the general examinations of CLEP." I take that to mean you can only use CLEP for 18 credits under the general requirements.

Then they state "Additional CLEP credit may be awarded for each satisfactory score on the CLEP subject examination." This statement is vague on its own......BUT why even list it if they are not going to award more than 18 CLEP credits???

I would appeal pronto.
