Question about a few classes.
#1
Hey all. I wasn't sure if I should be posting this here or in the degree planning forum. If I've goofed let me know and I'll move it.

A couple of months back I had posted looking for some guidance in starting my online education. Thanks to everyone who pitched in, you have been a huge help. I am now just on the tail end of my final Sophia courses and am plotting out the next leg of my journey. By mid-month I will have completed all of the Sophia courses, with the exception of their math because I had five Aleks math courses.

I'm about 90% sure that UMPI is the best fit for me and I'm wondering;

1 - Will Chemistry with a lab from Study.com meet UMPI's science requirement? I have read on here that the biology with lab does, but I already did the biology on Sophia and wanted to try something new.
2 - Will the Study.com Spanish 101: Beginning Spanish meet the UMPI language requirement?
2 - Will  Business Statistics - ACE ID: ALEK-0008 Meet the MAT 140: Mathematics for Business requirement?

If the answer to any of these is no, does anyone happen to know of courses offhand that do?

Thanks for your time!

1. Chemistry w/ lab should meet the requirement. ashkir posted a list of classes that would work here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid333844

2. It should, yes. InstantCert would be cheaper but you might as well do SDC if you have the free exam slot after taking another course or courses.

3. No, unfortunately not. You have to take their math course.
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

Thank you. I'll factor in for their math.

Chem with a lab should fill the GEC requirement for the science w/ lab.

Yes that Spanish class works as does InstantCert's Spanish 1.

Business Stats is not Business Math. You need Business Stats. You'll probably need to take this at UMPI. Remember you need to take 30 credits minimum at UMPI anyway.

Did you complete the Eng Comp 1 & 2 courses on Sophia? If not, don't. They're WAAAAAY easier and faster at UMPI.

Hey there. English Comp 2 is my last course from Sophia. I saw that people were recommending to do them elsewhere but I decided to give it a go as I really wanted to improve my writing skills in preparation for UMPI. I really enjoyed the first English Comp course, and the assignments were fairly easy. The assignments were all graded in a couple of days each so there was minimal waiting.

Eng Comp 2 is 1 paper at UMPI. I completed the entire course including the Final Assessment in 3 days at UMPI. It took me 2 months to get through the first 6 papers at Sophia. I dropped it and took it at UMPI and was sooo relieved. Wish I had just done that from the start.

If you need writing assistance, UMPI has a writing lab.

Yeah, English Comp 1 was one of my longer courses, almost two weeks. The second course seems like it mostly builds on one project that ladders to the next so I'm hopeful that it will be nice and smooth. I'm not in a rush with the courses, kind of enjoying the learning experience overall, so I don't mind if it takes me a bit to complete the courses. I'm also trying to get the classes at UMPI down to that magical 10 required and no more. I want to finish those within 2-3 8 week periods if possible. It's been enjoyable so far!

I have the same questions for you as I do on this thread and recommendations: So, I'll just copy/paste it here - https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid338712

Just wondering, how long did it take you to complete this number set of courses? I think you're in great shape, most schools will allow a max of 90 credit alternative credit transfer. So, my recommendation is to max out the Sophia.org, InstantCertCredit, Study.com credits to a total of 90. Then complete the requirements at the school you choose. It all depends on which degree you're looking at and the school that offers the degree... You should shoot for CBE programs first, unless you need a specific degree at the Big 3.

Basically, from reading your last post, you're looking to complete the UMPI in 2-3 terms, which will be $2800-$4200. That's comparable to completing the TESU courses in a flat term of $3500-$4600 depending if you're in-state or out of state. Which degree are you going for again? It depends on which degree you're going for and also the amount of time it took you to finish what you currently have done (Sophia courses).

Example: If you did say 24-27 Sophia.org courses in 3 months, then that's amazingly fast, it's like 8-9 courses per month. If this is the case, you can go for the UMPI as that's Competency Based Education, you can excel quickly through them and can most likely get this done in two terms. However, if it took you 9 months to get these completed, then that's the "threshold" point for many. It'll take 3-4 terms to finish and I will lean/recommend TESU instead.

In conclusion, get all the courses you can 90 credits max that can be transferable to both institutions and then you can make a "swoop" to the other school just in case something happens - like, in life, it's out of our control, be ready for a change and go get that degree! I cheer you on from the sidelines...

The Sophia courses went fairly fast. I guess I ended up doing 30 in two months and I am finishing up my last few touchstones in the next couple of weeks for my final three courses. I could have pressed and got it all done in two months but I've been doing it at a more leisurely pace with the courses that have touchstones. I took everything they had except the math as it looked like my old Aleks courses were mostly duplicate materials. I've enjoyed the courses but am feeling a little nervous about moving on to SDC and UMPI as all of my exams have been "open book" to this point and it feels like I'll be losing my training wheels Confused

I looked at TESU and the other Big 3 alternatives and am leaning more towards UMPI for a couple of reasons. I'm Canadian and the fees seem higher with TESU, though honestly, that isn't a huge dealbreaker if it's a better match for me. I'm lucky enough to be able to pay for most of this through my business. Another plug for UMPI is that  I would need to do 24 credits of RA and I have heard that TECEPS are pretty hard, so if I am going to need RA credits anyhow UMPI seems like a good fit. The feedback from the students at UMPI has been nothing but stellar, and I like that those last 10 courses will be all in one spot. The other thing for me is the whole capstone thing feels like a bit of an unknown as far as how much effort it takes.

I'm aiming for a bachelor's in accounting, and if it turns out that I don't have the chops for it I would transition to a Business Admin degree with an accounting or management and leadership major. It just depends on how well I take to the accounting courses. So far I've cobbled together this rough plan based on Sophia hitting most of the electives and general education, plus the Spanish and Science with a lab from SDC. I think all of the lower listed courses have appropriate equivalencies based on what I've been able to find on the WIKI and SDC, which would leave me the courses listed on top to take through UMPI. I'm kind of flying by the seat of my pants here and figuring it out as I go, but so far so good!! I will likely end up with way more than 90 credits, and some of it may even be duplicate stuff, but I'm not too concerned about that, I'm enjoying the journey. If I end up taking some accounting courses and end up inadvertently doing similar courses at UMPI then if anything I should be more familiar with the materials. Best case scenario if I end up with more credits than needed maybe I can take a few easier courses at UMPI, wishful thinking there.

I REALLY like your idea of being prepared for a swoop just in case as you are right, life does take some interesting trajectories. It's been a bit of a learning curve figuring out the roadmap, but it will get easier as I go I am sure.

Random question, but in that thread, you linked there was a comment about this course;

American Government from InstantCert

Is this one that I should be dog-earing to do as well?

Thanks for the cheers, and thanks for the information and suggestions. Everyone on here has been a huge help and it's appreciated.

I took AG at UMPI and it was easy! I had to write a 1500 word essay. I finished the course content and the essay in 3 days. If you want to hit transfer 90 credits then take it on InstantCert. Just keep in mind that you have to take at least 30 credits at UMPI.
