Question For All Clep / DSST Masters

am fairly new to the Clep / DSST world. I do have BAS degree in Aeronautics. I did take a few DSST exams that helped me complete my current degree.

I am interested in pursuing another degree in what I'm not sure of right now. My question is, are there any colleges out there that will let you basically Clep / DSST your way through a degree program without having to take any of their classes? I realize that may be a dumb question but having read many post on this site, some of them have lead me believe that this may be possible. If this is possible, please share the name of the college where this can be done.

Boy did you ever come to the right site...

Many (most?) of the forum members are current, past, or future students of what we call the Big 3. Excelsior College, Charter Oak State College, and Thomas Edison State College are regionally-accredited institutions with zero-residency requirements. They offer courses, but in most cases you are not required to take any of them. (there are exceptions - Excelsior business students must take an online business strategy course via Excelsior, and Charter Oak now requires a capstone class)

I'm about to complete a BS in Liberal Studies via Excelsior with credits from the following sources:
* AP exams taken during high school
* course credit taken at two different universities back in the 1980s
* GRE Literature In English (both Excelsior and Charter Oak grant credit for GRE subject exams)
* Penn Foster College (1-credit class in information literacy, completed online in about an hour)
* 10 DSST exams (9 done, 1 to go)
* 1 CLEP exam (the last hurrah)

Not a single credit came from Excelsior.

Wow that sounds like the degree I'm getting. Perrik is correct, those three will let you transfer all of your credits in with no classes taken there. EC does require some 1 credit class at the end of your degree though but you can take it through Penn Foster instead of EC.

Yes indeed! I am two tests away from finishing my BA in Social Sciences from Thomas Edison State College. I have taken 21 CLEP exams, 2 UEXCEL exams and, by the time I finish, 10 DSST exams. Absolutely no classes necessary to complete a degree in 10 months. So yes, it can definitely be done! I know everyone on the forums will be glad to help you get started and keep going!

I have my AA from Thomes Edison(TESC) and am going for my BA I have taken 1 course and plan to take 1 more from them. I did not have to do it that way I didn't need to take any courses there. Some of my credits are old CC credits the rest are CLEP/DSST/TECEP. So want you want is deffinetly doable

I got my degree from Thomas Edison and only had to take one online class from them and even that was just because there weren't enough CLEPs or DSSTs in my major area (history) to fulfill the credit requirements.

Several people have pointed out the big three already: Excelsior, Thomas Edison, and Charter Oak. There are others out there but none come close to the big three in cost, flexibility, speed, quality, and accreditation.

I usually recommend Excelsior. All three are good but they seem to have an edge on cost and customer service (TESC has lousy customer service). Also, I'm biased. I've earned two BS degrees, my wife one, and my son is well on his way to his (and he isn't 16 yet). All were through Excelsior.

Most of your degree can be handled via examinations if you chose the right major. BA/BS in liberal arts degrees and BS in general business degrees are pretty exam friendly. You may need to take one or two classes but these can be done via distance learning.

There are services that help you get on the right path or help with passing exams quickly. Some are downright expensive (one service costs about $3000 per year to give you the same info you can find here). Some are a great deal (I hear great things about InstantCert but have not used them myself). Some are reasonably priced and help weed out the junk info and smooth your path.

Welcome to the forum!

If your BAS in Aeronautics means Bachelor of Applied Science in Aeronautics and it was a pretty "normal" degree plan (with general ed, etc.), I would expect that you would be eligible to get a second Bachelors degree in anything you choose through Excelsior College for an additional 30 credits.

You will need to talk with them about your options. Don't be surprised if they encourage you to go on to a Master's program instead. (You can do what you want but they like people to move forward.)

For most of us, the policy seems pretty strict, but in your case (since they don't offer a degree in Aeronautics) I would not expect it to be.
