I am taking CLEPs to earn a salary increase. I have taken the Freshman Comp and English Comp CLEPs. People tell me that they usually substitute for the same class. However, they were different tests. My questions are:
1. Why do they both exist if they sub for the same credits?
2. Are they generally RECOGNIZED as separate tests, or are they viewed as one and the same?

Freshman Comp is graded by the school you send your results to; English Comp w/ essay is graded by the College Board.

1. Some institutions only accept one or the other, and not both.
2. They are viewed as separate tests.
