Problem transferring SL Lab Courses to COSC
#11
J_T Wrote:Thanks for the input guys. These two courses are listed in the SL-COSC articulation agreement as worth 4 credits each and meeting the full science requirement at COSC. Which is the norm.. since most colleges award 4 credits for science courses with lab. They are also recommended as 4 credits by ACE.

I will bring this up with my advisor when she sends me the official evaluation.

Hopefully they will catch the error ahead of that and you won't have to play too much email-tag Smile

That's exactly what happened. How did you know?! :leaving:
Yeah.. so I logged in this morning to check my advising worksheet and sure enough they changed both courses to 4 credits and checked off my science requirement as being met. They must have caught the error, since I hadn't sent them an e-mail about it yet.

Now just waiting for the last transcript to be added in...!

Glad it worked out. Going to the graduation in June?

Thanks dude!

Yeah.. if everything works out I'll be there. I still need to tackle Cornerstone tho. Can't say I'm looking forward to the research paper.. I suck at writing. But I guess I'll manage... I made it through Comp I and II, but it was hard.

The cornerstone is easy...the capstone was tough.

I'm glad I won't have take capstone since I'm getting an associate degree. But I'll have to take it eventually... I'm planning on getting a B.S. in Homeland Security at TESC. If everything works out, I might enroll later this year.

Did Charter Oak accept your SL Intro to Communications to satisfy their Oral Communications? Or are you taking it through them? My daughter just enrolled; I'd rather have her take Public Speaking somewhere else and am considering having her drop the Speech Communication she's currently registered for and take BYU's course instead. But I would prefer Straighterline if I knew COSC accepted it.
ALSO, can anyone confirm that COSC still accepts BYU's course? I read on the thread from many years ago that they did, but I can't seem to find a more recent post about it. (still looking)
Thanks!

On the Straigherline/Charter Oak equivelancy guide, I don't see the Intro to Communications listed:

Right, Publius, I didn't see it either. I even talked to a Straighterline live chat person who said COSC didn't accept it. What prompted me to ask J_T is, when looking at J_T's completed courses and in progress courses above, the Cornerstone is the only one listed as in progress. My daughter is dreading this course, and BYU sounds better than COSC's course. J_T and my daughter are so similar in progress, I was curious how J_T fulfilled this (not seeing any other public speaking in his list.)

Thanks!

Yes, they eventually accepted SL's Intro to Communications as meeting the Oral Communication requirement. I had emailed an admissions counselor before I enrolled at COSC. Initially, she was unsure if it would meet the requirement or not. I asked her to check for me and pleaded my case... I explained to her that SL's Intro to Communications course was focused on speech communications (according to the syllabus and ACE recommendation) and that the student was required to deliver several speeches (recorded in video format and sent for grading). I attached the course syllabus and copy-pasted ACE's recommendation for the course. After some back and forth e-mail tag... she said it would meet the requirement... but not before she tried to convince me to take COSC's COM 101 Speech Communication instead. I told her I had already paid and started SL's Intro to Communications course and wanted to use that option.

So.. the short answer is yes. I'm not sure if they made an exception in my case or if it applies to everyone, but I would definitely give it a try. If for some reason they don't accept it... I would still take the SL course and then submit an official appeal asking for the requirement to be waived. You could use the course syllabus and ACE recommendation information as supporting evidence. It clearly states that the course is focused on oral communications. I was planning on doing that in case they didn't accept it.
