exactly like CLEP. Negligible differences- still $80. DSST only has 4 choices while CLEP has 5, but if you took that away you'd be looking at the same format.
Here's my background- I've never taken algebra, not in high school and not in college. But, the very few computations needed for stats/prob were not difficult at all. I started by watching the Learner dot org videos on stats (casually, not taking notes or anything) to see if I even had a shot at learning anything- turns out it wasn't too bad. So, I started ALEKS stats. Just short of stabbing myself in the eye, I gave up and went to the Khan video series on stats/prob. I watched each video and took notes on things that felt important. When I got confused, I paused and rewatched the section. It was really not bad at all. I can't remember why, but the last few videos were either unrelated or something, anyway, so technically I didn't watch the last few. I took the DSST and passed. I went onto grad school that required a course in stats (no prob) and a course in research with stats (no prob) and did my thesis which required data collection and synthesis (no prob!) So, the amount of stats a person learns doing what I did was more than enough. I'll link you to the things I mentioned above.

As you can see from DSST's own paperwork, you only need about 42% correct to pass: http://getcollegecredit.com/assets/pdf/D...coring.pdf
