Nervous About First CLEP: Intro to Sociology
#1
Hey everyone!

I'm new to InstantCert and the forums and I've decided to take Intro to Sociology as my first CLEP exam. All I have for study material are the IC flashcards and I've studied them 20+ hours. I average 85% or more on all the sections randomized, however, I just took a Peterson's Practice Test and I scored a 55% ><... It seemed to me a lot of the answers they were looking for were nowhere to be found from the flashcards.

Anyways, I already scheduled my test for this Wednesday in the morning, and am really nervous about failing it due to the low score from the Peterson.

So I was wondering if the Specific Feedback Forum would be a good idea to research or if it would mostly be outdated information, and if so, what I should do. Also if you guys could tell me how you conquered your Sociology exam or just have any general tips for a noobie like me it would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!

Definitely check out the Specific Feedback, it's a Godsend!
Here is what I posted a few months back.
"I passed Intro to Sociology today with a 62.
My reaction was the same as Levi's and the Bee man's - I expected a higher score than I got - But I didn't care coz I saved time and money and earned 3 credits - YeeHaw
My testing experience paralleled the Chicken. I studied one week, used IC, Peterson's, REA and CliffNotes Sociology."

Also, I use Peterson's as a learning tool, so I retake the tests until I'm understanding the information.
Good luck!

A 55 on Peterson's is good...when I took Peterson's I always got in the low 40's and I passed the exam (but barely)... Are you using REA? It's always best to use IC with another source...
Good luck!

That makes me feel a little better thanks! And I'm not using REA because I actually just found out about it and there's no local book stores around me unfortunately Sad. I've been reading the Specific Feedback and lots of people say to sparknotes as well so that's what I'm doing at the moment. But thanks for the feedback!

Thank you for that post!! Some of the sample questions actually showed up on my test and I was able to use that to my advantage. I passed but BARELY by a 53! Now I'll make sure to use other sources besides IC like REA for different subjects.

Thanks for all your posts guys, really appreciate it!

Congrats!

I passed the Intro to Sociology myself today with a lowly 52, and had mixed feelings. I was happy that I passed but surprised at the low score. They must have upgraded the exam because everyone was saying how easy it was, but it was a beast. For a 'so called' level 2 test - this test was as hard as the American Government (level 4) test.

I studied the REA CLEP book and found it was fair, but some of the information in their practice tests was no where to be found in the book - that puzzled me a little. None-the-less it was a fair resource. A far easier study resource was the two DVD's by Standard Deviants "Sociology 1" and "Sociology 2". If you can get them used and in good shape, JUMP ON THEM!

The above resources were very good but the best study resource that I have found was a book entitled "Sociology a down-to-earth approach" by Shelly Dutchin. The title says it all; it is truly easy and "down-to-earth" learning for terms and examples and I would have failed the exam with it. I would get all three study resources listed above.
