Has anyone done a portfolio assessment, if yes, could you please PM me and let me know what info I should start gathering? How intensive is it?

I suggest Kaplan's Free Open Learning PLA. In addition to getting 3 ACE approved credits, you can work through the course and learn how to do a portfolio assessment.

Do these PLA's appear as if you took the course on the transcript?

I am not familiar with the process other than what I learned from the free course i mentioned earlier. It is a great starting point.
Overall, the PLA assessment is used to petition for credit .
Perhaps it depends on the school you attend.

Does TESC accept the Kaplan PLA assessment for 3 credits even if you never do a PLA? Is it just a free elective?

I took it and transferred it to TESC under the 2015 plan, they put it in my GenEd. It can count as an IPS and/or General Ed Electives (or Free Electives). They also split it into 2 separate courses, PLA-101 is 1 cr, PLA-102 is 2 cr.
I did not do a PLA at all, just used those credits for the course.
They are not listed as GenEd any longer in the 2016 GenEd courses, so they must have switched it to Free Electives only after July 1, 2015.

The Kaplan course is fine for an introduction, but if you aren't going to take TESC's PLA courses, you should at least read over them on the Saylor website. TESC has its own requirements for how the portfolio should be organized and what it should include.

Every college will have their own requirements, so no one can answer for you what you need to include. But, taking the Kaplan PLA is informative, at least to get you started on understanding the process generally. Nothing to lose since it's free. I thought it looked like a LOT of work, but that's just me.
