Poll: Debate or Speech?
#11
nick94 Wrote:Just wondering if anyone here did Debate or Speech events with any national organization, NCFCA, NFCA, etc... If you do do Speech or Debate post how long you have done it.

Expos is my thing! Smile I competed in the NCFCA for two years (06' & 07'), the first year competing in expos, the second year competing in duo with my brother. I never debated, but both my brothers have done policy debate.

When I first discovered the NCFCA back in 2005, timing at the Colorado National Open, I was region 3 (which consists of 11 north-western states). Then I moved to region 8 (GA, FL, SC, NC), which is where I competed both years. I went to nationals with my expos in 2006, and competed in out rounds, but no further (still, going to nats was incredible). Now I live in region 7 (MS, TN, AL, LA), where my younger brother debated.

phew! NCFCA is great. Has anyone here also been involved in CFC (Communicators for Christ)?

It was the Region V Regional Tournament in Kansas City. It was my last (NCFCA) Speech Competition ever. Big Grin

I hate speech. My worst nightmare.

I went to a college preparatory HS that required lots of speeches and presentations rather than tests. I must have given at least 50 formal speeches/presentations in HS and it never got any easier for me.

I may have to take the Principles of Speaking DSST if I get intro Troy. It's only 3 minutes, but I'm already afraid that I'll draw a blank and fail. Thoughts of Obama without a teleprompter come to mind. I have much respect for anyone who actually enjoys this.

Hm. Goes to show that we're all wired differently. I love giving impromptus; always have, though practice has expanded the scope of my enjoyment. Giving a five minute speech with two minutes prep just doesn't seem that bad once you've done it a hundred times!

The whole test is three minutes, or just the speaking part is three minutes?

lol... no, that was probably my fault. You did say it was your first year before you mentioned rounds. Smile

Wow, Anna Kate, I have so much to say I don't know where to start! I was at Nationals in 2006 as well, competing in impromptu and policy debate. I didn't break either, though I loved every minute of it. But I wonder if we saw each other. Smile

About CFC.. I went to their Masters conference in LA in 2006. I haven't been to any of their other events, but the Masters conference was amazing! I learned a lot and that really took me outside my comfort zone.

And finally... I noticed in your signature that you're in CollegePlus! So am I! Are you just getting started or are you just new to this site? It's been so helpful. The flashcards are great and the advice from everyone else is better. Smile

Ok... so that's all I wanted to say. Oh, and welcome to InstantCert!

I had a friend at that tournament... do you know Brianna Landon? I probably would have known some of the other people as well as I live in Wichita and competed in Region V! I wonder if I know you? Smile

I am acquainted with her, though I don't know her well because I don't live in Kansas.

You will not regret taking the time and effort to hone your skills. I assure you: I don't at all.

That is definitely true! Before doing speech and debate I would not have thought I could argue logically and organize my mind so well. It really worked wonders!

Wow, so cool! We probably did see each other; funny. Smile Nationals was a ton of fun for me because they got Expos and Extemp out of the way on the first day, and since I didn't break, I had the entire rest of the week to hang out with friends and watch nationally-ranked speeches. haha. I watched DI finals in pattern A, and HI finals in pattern B. That was interesting, went from tears to laughter. Wink

mm, yes, I had a lot of friends at that Masters. I heard ALL about it, how you went to New Orleans and saw the devastation of Katrina. That's what I remember anyway. I went to Masters the next year, in Kentucky. I'm pretty excited, because I know practically half of the CFC interns this year! Two of them are indeed some of my best friends. I mean, I won't be going to a conference, but it's still exciting for them.

YAY! I knew it was just a matter of time before someone would mention CP! I started the whole process in early 2008, and have been studying and taking tests off and on since. My coach's name is Brittany, as a matter of fact. It has been really difficult at times, and I've even come to the point of considering not continuing, but thanks to the AMAZING staff at CP!, who simply would never give up on me, I'm still plowing through. This time around I really think I'm a bit more focused, and can see a small patch of light at the end of the tunnel, haha.

How about you? Who is your coach and how long have you been involved? What are your plans after you finish?

I love watching HI! I did see some at Nationals, but I was also working a booth for an organization called Generation Joshua after I didn't break. So I didn't end up seeing a whole bunch. Did you ever do an interpretive event? I did a dramatic interpretation--but it wasn't like most that made people cry. Though one time I had three male judges and they ALL had tears in their eyes. That was the highlight of my DI career. Wink

That's so great to hear about CP! Aren't they great? I feel like I change my plans every other day and my coach is so helpful and accommodating. Keep going... I'm sure you can do it! Especially with IC... the advice and encouragement are invaluable.

I started CollegePlus! last August and started taking exams in September. I am hoping to be done with my degree the end of this month. It's kind of crazy right now... trying to finish up the last few exams, but I am SO excited! My coach is Sarah and she's amazing. Actually, you know Candace, the other CP person on here? She's Sarah's sister. Smile

As far as future plans... I have an interview next weekend with Generation Joshua (which I mentioned before). They're a branch of HSLDA and headquartered in VA. I'm really excited about the possibility of working there as soon as I finish up.

So what are you getting your degree in and what do you hope to do when you finish?

I am in NCFCA!! Region 2 to be exact. Smile
So...I'm in the same region as you.
This year was also my first year, and my last year too (as a debate/speech competitor), because I'm a senior in highschool.
I am so happy that I was given with the opportunity to participate in NCFCA this year; it has immensely improved my public speaking skills and God has richly blessed me with many new friendships and learning experiences that will last me a lifetime.
At the beginning of the year when my coach announced partner pairings, I was surprised to discover that my debate partner was also doing CLEP tests through CollegePlus just like I was! It has been very exciting for me because throughout the year we have been able to help each other with different tests as well as speeches...and the proof is right here, since he's the one who introduced me to Instacert. =D
I don't have the exact total of the rounds we won memorized though...lol.
How many years do you have left in NCFCA?
Miracles are a retelling in small letters of the very same story which is written across the whole world in letters too large for some of us to see.
