Please Review my TESU Associates (ASBA) Plan

dfrecore Wrote:3) Take the TECEP's. I took English Comp II TECEP and thought it was a piece of cake. And I only had to spend an hour of my life on it, with no papers to write.

How does credit appear for a TECEP, if you are going to bring it to another school? Does it look like you took a challenge exam at TESU? So would someone be required to order a TESU transcript for all future schools (assuming that almost all require every transcript).

That's smart, and you may want to do PreCalc too. ALEKS may be changing as early as July 1st.

I agree that you should attempt it if you want to - I was just disagreeing with bjcheung's statement that it was required. It is NOT required at TESU to take Precalc for the BSBA.

AwardTour Wrote:dfrecore, I appreciate you sharing your insights on how to test out VS. writing papers. Are you saying that Option "#2) Take College Comp Modular CLEP and Advanced College Comp DSST exam" allows someone to avoid writing papers completely? So those two exams map to ENC 101 & 102?

Yes, this is correct - no papers to write for these exams, they're both multiple-choice-only exams. And they map to English I & II at TESU (and WGU as well).

LOL, what a mix of emotions for me today. The great feeling of getting the good news from dfrecore that it is possible to use College Comp Modular CLEP and Advanced Comp DSST to substitute essay writing COMBINED with the bad news from Ideas that ALEKS might be on shaky ground with ACE which is leading to some type of change soon.

ALEKS selling point/reason for existing from their website:

"Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course she is taking.

ALEKS also provides the advantages of one-on-one instruction, 24/7, from virtually any Web-based computer for a fraction of the cost of a human tutor."

So if ALEKS is forced to have Proctored Final Exams the only possible thing in my mind that could save it is if the Finals make up 30% or less of the Final Grade. ALEKS was made to take humans out of the equation in learning Mathematics. Bringing a human in to watch over a Proctored Final Exam makes little sense since ALEKS' "artificial intelligence" is supposed to be the deciding factor.

I'm building my plan with ALEKS now simply being a place holder. I won't have enough time to knock anything out before July 1st due to some upcoming travel. This really really sucks....

ALEKS isn't on shaky ground necessarily, as much as I think ACE is trying to get some consistency with their providers. We (on this forum) have known for years that it's too good to last as is.

The other good news with ALEKS - their Stats is terrible, much harder to pass than most other providers. So, if you only get through Intermediate and College Algebra, you're good. If you can get Precalc in there as well, great. But if you can't get to Stats, you can find much easier ways to get through it than ALEKS - it just won't be as cheap.

I know ALEKS is a bad idea for Stats. I plan on using SL for Stats.

What is the major anticipated change that people are worried about? If I take Intermediate and College Algebra with ALEKS in August (when I return home) will the big change be Proctored Final Exams? I am not asking you to predict the future, just a best guess. Thanks again.

Yes, many of us think they will be forced to add proctored finals.
