Closing the forum for 3 days is not a great way to publish a major release. I'm a bit concern about their approach.
In those cases, you rebuild a new version with a database copy on the side and when are ready you flip the switch. You don't hail mary with your production build altho I'm sure they have a backup (or their hosting provider does.)

Always, always create a test board if you're installing new software! This way, you can make sure the new system works properly before you launch. There are many ways a forum installation/upgrade can go wrong, so don't do that without thorough testing and plenty of backups.
I run another forum, and I recently upgraded from phpBB to MyBB. This was a major transition, but because we'd tested everything, we only had 12 hours of downtime (and that's considering we held a special event to commemorate the transition, and I spent much of that period at work).
Course clear! You got a card.
