Depending on how long you have it and how your body heals the hole may never close. My grandmother didn't wear earrings for over 35 years and she still had holes. The point is that when you do something like this it can't be for a fad or to give in to peer pressure, it has to be your decision and a valid decision. JMHO. I don't want to raise my kids to follow every whim and teen trend and feel the need to "be cool" or "fit in" you have to do what everyone else does. It has to be a logical process. I guess I'm just too old fashioned, but I have wild friends and I have seen how some of their decisions as teens and young adults held them back or negatively influenced their options as adults. It is truly a personal preference and I figure if my kids really want to do something they will still do it after they think about the and reflect on it, hence he has his ear pierced for almost 3 years, while some of his friends keep getting more piercings and tatoos trying to look better and feel better about themselves.

I always advise against piercings that can't be covered. I also advise against any gauges. If you try to join the military, they will make you surgically close any gauge holes in your ears if you enlist. Plus, having 33 piercings, and the ability to let the size of a small rat past through a hole in your ear, doesn't look all that appealing.

The army is very selective these days. I found this on a forum site.
"I worked for my last year in recruiting in the operations section. It was my job to review all tattoos for content and size. Toward the end of 2010 we were getting much stricter with tattoo placement and size. For example if a tattoo was on the back of your neck even the smallest part of it was visible you would be disqualified from joining the Air Force. When the amount of people needed by the military goes down the standards and adherence to policy goes up!!"

I have always wanted to get my targus pierced, I'm just scared of the pain. As of now I have two holes in each ear. I pierced the 2nd ones myself before school when i was 12. I also pierced by nose and my belly button (yeah a DIY) a couple years later. The nose piercing looked bad, i don't have the nose for it. And the belly button kept snagging. So needless to say, I quickly got rid of both of them.
Piercings and tattoos do not bother me. To each there own. I also live in the Pacific Northwest and both are very common. I do however feel bad for the people with full on facial tattoos. There are a few people I see around just covered in facial tattoos and huge gaged earrings. I know it is wrong to judge, but I do wonder why anyone would do that to themselves.

I've never had piercings nor tattoos. But when I was younger I remember thinking a lot of girls with piercings and tattoos were HOT! Now in hindsight I realize these girls were HOT who just happened to have piercings and tattoos. Now I regress before somebody calls me a dirty old man...carry on.

Well, it also depends on the MEPS you attend and the recruiter you get. I don't think If I buy into what that recruiter said, either. I saw a couple of people at MEPS, back in 2007, get denied due to their body artwork. And back then they were handing out enlistment bonuses like crazy. I also notice tattoos impacting your promotion points, as well. The only time see it not playing a crucial role in your rate of promotion is those in the SF community. Though, even then, it's still a crap shoot.

Kaz Wrote:I'm confused. How is a pierced ear a lifelong decision? I got tired of mine quickly and it grew over in a couple years.
Large gauge piercings can be life-long decisions, unless someone has the funds to pay for reconstructive surgeries. For people with huge holes in their lobes (or wherever else, eck), they can take them out, but then it looks even worse and are not likely to close and heal without medical intervention.
Tattoos can be removed, but it is a long and painful process. I cringe when I hear of people that went on a whim and got tattooed, particularly on necks, faces, arms, and other visible places. I wish more tattoo and piercing artists were like the one I found. She does not do same-day artwork; we worked for a few weeks on the design, then once agreed, scheduled an appointment two weeks later to allow time for cold feet to set in. At the first meeting to design, she asked what I do for a living and made recommendations to keep it contained where it would not affect work/life needs. They do body piercings there as well, and appeared to follow the same later appointment policy in case someone's impulse fades after a bit of thought. She said it does mean missed appointments and loss of money, but they feel better knowing they are less likely to be party to a later regret.

I am not against piercings or tattoos. I am against people who have them complaining about how they can't find a job. If you decide to have facial piercings or tattoos then you are also deciding to make finding a job much more difficult. Life choices have consequences.
I had this renter a couple years back with multiple lip, nose, ears and eye brow tattoos. I would say 10-12 total on his face. He also had a spiked/pointed haircut. He was always unemployed and would complain that he couldn't find a job. I said why don't get rid of your piercings and comb your hair so you can take care of your girlfriend and two kids. He said no way and that they were making out fine on welfare, unemployment and food stamps. It's no surprise I ended up evicting them for non payment of rent.
