Information Systems CLEP Difficulty

Hi all,

Does anyone know the difficulty of the IT CLEP? CS/ Web design is a hobby of mine so I know the basic terms and everything. Also, on a side note would anyone recommend the Peterson's practice tests or is there a website that actually has a practice test? Free-clep-prep.com is great but unfortunately they do not have one in this subject, yet.

I have a similar background -- web and graphic design. I passed with a 76, but I studied quite a bit over the course of about a week. (I'd say about 20 hours total, maybe up to 30.) Your background will help with maybe 10-20% of the questions. The test focuses a lot on IT subjects that I didn't know much about, such as network configurations, GPS tech, database types, different software production theories, and IT managerial roles. My exam was really heavy on understanding IT roles in the workplace, and the subtle differences between them (CTO vs Information Systems Manager, etc.).

If you can get your hands on a copy of the CLEP official study guide -- I found those questions to be closest to what appeared on the exam. The free Modern States course was also really helpful.

Systems Admin/Security geek here. Studied just using Modern States for review and cut a 77.

If you have a keen interest in computers and IT, this CLEP shouldn't be especially difficult. As Greencouch mentioned, however, there can be a few tricky questions (like the subtle distinctions between different IT jobs), so you would be wise to invest a few hours in study.

Also, if there are any younger students reading this, watch out for questions about "legacy" technologies - you'll probably get a few questions about floppy drives and other technologies that you probably haven't used before.

The DSST had a lot of old stuff.  As a 46-yo, it was right up my alley.  There was stuff in there that I thought "if someone much younger than me takes this, they won't have a clue!"  WYSIWYG, 5 1/4 vs 3 1/2 floppy's, DOS, pre-mouse usage of the keyboard (yes, that was how we did it kids), starting up a computer with a disk, etc.  It was nuts.  I think they've updated it since then, but I'm not sure how much of that stuff they took out.
