Past Transcripts/Grad School (WGU)
#1
Sooooo, I owe my Community College roughly $1,000 to release my transcript s.....so I was crunching some numbers last night and saw that it would be vastly cheaper (70%) to just retake all of my classes via Straighterline,CLEP, and Study.com and transfer those credits into my degree instead.

Fast forward: when Grad schools (particularly WGU) request trancripts from ALL schools, exactly how serious are they about that??? 😃

I'd rather just send TESU's 💯💯💯

Theyre pretty serious. You may get away with it but the risk is they could take back your degree or remove you from the program. For $1000 id just pay the cc. Not alot of money considering the risks.

Nothing will probably happen at wgu. I still think its worth paying the debt. Its not a ton of money and its not good to have that type of unpaid debt looming overhead
Currently studying for: Still deciding.

You might get away with it....but I would pay the $1000. For one thing you awe it, for another you don't want the thought of them pulling your degree to follow you around. Pay it.

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Pay your debt, get your credits, sleep well at night, use the extra sleep to rest your brain from studies, move on with your degree, graduate, become billionaire, laugh that you once contemplated trading your integrity for $1000 bucks.

If it hasn't already, it can ruin your credit. Not to mention the school can come back and sue you later...school debts never go away, even if you were to declare bankruptcy. So just pay it and get it over with.

Most schools that ask for ALL transcripts are very serious. They wont do anything (admission, evaluation, financial aid) without all official transcripts on file. I went through this with 2 different schools.

Many/most schools now report to the National Student Clearinghouse so you won't be able to hide previous attendance anymore.

I know $1k is a lot of money, but it's offset by the money and time you would have spent on SL and study.com.

I'm all for letting debt expire worthless after statue of limitations and not paying creditors, but this is one you should pay.

There is no statute of limitations for public college debt; it's like IRS debt, it never expires, never goes away. Anything that has to do with the government will follow you to the ends of the earth. Plus, in some states, they can grab your state tax refunds or garnish your wages to repay your debt (with penalties and interest). And they don't have to take you to court to do so.

Actually even federal tax debt does expire, after ten years without activity that would "pause" it, which is mostly limited to actions by the taxpayer. Of course if you're owed a refund, you only have three years to file to collect it.

Ok, I misspoke. Yes, after 10 years, your IRS debt gets written off. BUT, in those intervening 10 years, they will do their very best to make your life a living hell. They can (and will) audit you multiple times, garnish your wages, seize your federal tax refunds, seize your bank accounts, place a tax lien on your house or other property, and can force you to sell your house. So, the chances of them not collecting at least some of the taxes you owe is slim. Plus, if you get a tax lien, that's on your credit and is as bad as having a repo. Not a good plan for most people.

When you owe money to a public state college, after the statute of limitations is up, they can no longer try to collect the money, but they can refuse to render services, which includes sending a transcript to you. And if they report to the national clearinghouse, then any school is going to be able to see that you can't get your transcript because you owe money to another school, which may hurt your chances to get into the college that you want to.

If it was $25,000, I might say that you should try to negotiate with them, but when it's only $1,000, just pay it (they will usually work with you on a payment plan). It's not worth the hassle it brings into your life.
