Overcoming a bad GPA
#11
sanantone Wrote:I've literally looked at hundreds of master's programs. 99% of them require transcripts from all colleges attended. If they find out you didn't submit them all, your degree could be revoked. It's also unethical and unfair to other applicants. Many graduate schools only look at the last 60 credits even though they still require all transcripts, but you won't have a GPA for those if you completely test out. Really, 3 Fs shouldn't hurt your GPA that much. If you forwarded that transcript to TESC, every graduate school will now know you attended it because the credits earned will have the school's name above it on TESC's transcript. If tou don't submit that transcript to TESC, that degree can be revoked too.

I think you misunderstood what I meant. I didn't mean to hide the old transcript from grad school, I said to not bother with the hassle of using it in the TESC degree if there wasn't any quantity of earned credit. There is no reason to send a transcript with C, D, F, F, to TESC. Then, later if you attend grad school, you will reveal the semester you attempted at the CC on your grad school application. The CC transcript will not make up part of your TESC degree unless you send in the credit. You can ask TESC if you feel this is in any way unethical (it's not). THE DISCLOSURE issue is earning duplicate degrees in the same subject from different colleges using the same credits- TESC requires you to sign a document that says you're not doing this. (eg. earning a degree in Psychology from ABC Uni and then doing it again at TESC would void your TESC degree)

There is no issue with your CC transcript being omitted. Call TESC. Ask an advisor.

I attended a community college about 13 years ago and only completed 4 classes (Grades C, D, F, F). The rest of the classes were withdrawn. Is there any way that TESC or a grad school can find out about this if I don't disclose it?

Excuse me if this is a stupid question...I am only asking because my wife took a couple classes at a community college and she said that she never disclosed that to her grad schools and she has a masters from a prestigious school.

If you want to give yourself a leg up by being chosen in competitive admissions over people who worked hard to not receive Fs, then go ahead. There is a good chance you won't be caught, but I wouldn't want the small chance of being caught looming over my head until I retire and don't need the degree. The only way I can think of that they can find out about it is if the financial aid office communicates with admissions and records or the registrar. If you used financial aid for the CC, then financial aid can see that you've done so. Some states have academic fresh start programs where you can wipe out all of your past credits. That would be the right way to go about this.

This is what the application says.
Quote:Please select below each college or university that you have previously attended. You should have transcripts sent from each institution.

TESC already has a policy of not utilizing credits that will bring the evaluation GPA too low. The transfer credits won't count toward the official TESC GPA anyway, so I don't see any point in omitting the transcript.

I just want to weigh in with my <.02 ...

I don't think any graduate school would ever revoke someone's degree because they found out that they had neglected to submit some irrelevant transcripts.

"Dr. John Jones recently had his degree revoked because Harvard Medical School found out he had gotten F's in Deep Sea Basketweaving and English 101. His patients were shocked and saddened to find out that their beloved doctor once had a bad semester of college and was not the deep sea basketweaver they thought him to be!"

Just sayin.

This made me laugh.

Seriously, I think it boils down to an issue of personal integrity. I think OP should ask TESC if they HAVE to submit transcripts from each college. The website says you "should" from what I'm reading below but that's not exactly a specific instruction.

One hiccup I'm thinking about in all of this which I have not yet read about is if they do require you to divulge ALL of your transcripts you could be caught when you sign up for financial aid. When they process your aid quarters/semesters of use and prior loans will likely show up. ETA - NVM, I see Sanantone already covered that issue.

You aren't going to get someone on this forum to co-sign an action that borders on impropriety so it's better just to ask the college what their policy is and follow the policy.
Don't miss out on something great just because it might also be difficult.

I certainly would kick someone out of a program if I found out they lied. If it were a competitive program, their lying could have been instrumental in them being admitted over more honest, more deserving, and more qualified individuals.

OP, Don't submit anything you don't have to. If your entire transcript from one school is all irrelevant, don't submit it.
All F's means you didn't earn any credits, which makes it worthless. If you did get some credits but mostly got a bunch of F's... I'd consider sacrificing those few credits to keep your GPA shiny.

This article might make you feel a bit better:

"On more than one occasion as both a graduate school and business school admissions dean, I admitted applicants with GPA's below 2.0. That may seem hard to believe, but it's true"

I don't think there is any harm in the OP asking TESC before they proceed one way or another. It's foolish to say that the situation is always handled that way by every institution based on anecdotal evidence. Just reading a school's listed policies got me into a lot of trouble at SNHU. You should ALWAYS ask the school before you take any advice from this forum. Always.

Exactly. Just ask and do it via email so you have the response in writing.

Yes, every college is different, so you will have to ask TESC and the graduate schools you plan to apply to. As far as degree revocation goes, I am not making this stuff up.

Quote:Failure to acknowledge and submit all transcripts may be grounds to deny or revoke admission, to be dismissed from the University, or to have any degrees granted revoked.
Transcripts

Quote:What happens if I don't report all previous institutions that I have attended?
A student will have provided false information, and could potentially have his or her admission or degree revoked.
