Other options like CLEP
#1
So I understand that CLEP, DSST and Excelsior offer exams that can provide credit for certain courses. Are there any other programs like these out there?

CSU-Global has 129 CBE's, more than those 3 combined. They are more expensive ($250 each), but there are lots of UL exams.

There are also TECEPs from TESU. We know that COSC and TESU will accept CSU Global CBEs. With any other school, you should ask about acceptance because CSU Global lists the CBEs as transfer credit, which can mean that another school may not accept them.

For Davar Academy and Saylor, you study however you want (but they provide a lot of suggested material) and take a single exam.

Single exam options also include Saylor, AP, NYU-Foreign Language Profeciency Exam, and ACTFL - Foreign Language Profeciency Exam. In addition, if you are willing to attend Charter Oak State College, you can take the GRE subject exam in any subject for big credit.

I want to call out Davar Academy for self study and credit by examination. I discovered Davar Academy pretty far into my BSLA degree from Excelsior College and took four courses with Davar Academy. If you are self motivated, then I think Davar Ac. is an excellent option. Since I discovered them about a year ago, they have since added several more courses in a variety of disciplines and in both lower level and upper level credits.
Had I found them earlier, I would have used them exclusively since the course format is about the same for all their courses - at least the four that I took, I can say for sure. Also, the cost per course is about the most affordable that I found. I just completed MAN 401 Advanced Strategic Mgmt and Business Policy last week and it cost me $70 plus the cost to take the exam with Proctur U which was another $35. So for $105, I earned my last 3 upper level credits that I needed to complete my degree. Awesome!

Good luck everyone!

Saylor Academy is also credit by exam. One exam at a cost of $25 if using online proctoring, totally free if you can find a proctor on your own.

I've heard about that. Who can I use as a proctor? Does it have to be some particular person such as a librarian, or could it be like a family member?

I don't know about Saylor's specific policy, but most proctoring requirements follow similar rules. Usually, they are looking for an unbiased trustworthy person that understands academic integrity. Typically they require someone with a college degree and specifically disallow family members or people who live with you.

Most librarians and colleges can perform this service, and of course, there are companies that perform proctoring as a full-time thing (though cost more than the $25 you could pay via ProctorU).

I looked into this a while back since my wife is a college professor and I figured would make a great proctor. The problem is that she lives in the same house so is therefore specifically excluded by most proctor agreements.
Working on: Debating whether I want to pursue a doctoral program or maybe another master's degree in 2022-23
