I bought the Asus Eee Pc that I'm writing this reply on. It cost me $270 plus S&H at Amazon. I bought this one because it had the most positive reviews on Amazon within my price range, and I love it! The keyboard is 93% the size of a standard keyboard. I tried an hp netbook at Best Buy, and didn't like the keyboard at all. It was almost like a flat piece of metal that had been cut into separate keys, so trying to find any separation in the keys while typing is almost impossible. The Asus Eee Pc comes with Windows 7 Starter, which does everything I need, but may be a little to stripped down for some. I hope this helps!

Why a netbook though? You can get a regular laptop for $600-700 and it will be more than sufficient if you're just using it for school and internet browsing.
I have a Sony VAIO that I paid about $700 for, tax free on base. Has a big screen, good battery life, easy to type on, etc. I don't play games or anything on it so you don't need a huge RAM or video card and so on so it saves on cost.
You mentioned that your current laptop is big and bulky, that's really how they all were a few years ago. Now even the crappier ones are fairly slim so that shouldn't be a problem.

Fair point; if a person isn't travelling much then a laptop with a reasonable screen might even be cheaper.
I use a notebook because I travel (fly) a lot and need the 6+ hours battery life, need a portable (small) device to carry and still want to get work done. Coming free with the internet dongle was a bonus but I would have been happy to pay $200. $600-$700 is a different question for me.

That was the primary reason for this discussion. Marianne202 was looking for advice and suggestions regarding a small, compact, portable and inexpensive tool while traveling this summer that perhaps could fit in a backpack.
