Yes, you are correct, you need to make sure to have the CLEP exams matching up with Excelsior's accepted list. Are you Military and getting these exams for free? Now to answer your question why it's not available on the CLEP list is because of one simple answer. You're looking at DSST's and NOT CLEPS, you switched the two providers!

CLEP: https://clep.collegeboard.org/exams
DSST: https://www.getcollegecredit.com/exam_fact_sheets/

To help you further, I just got word from one of my Excelsior students. He started exactly 60 days ago from 6 credits, following my course/exam recommendations, he's now up to exactly 105 credits - cheap/easy/fast. You can too, SKIP CLEP/DSST as the exam centers are closed. Work on your Sophia.org course as they're all FREE now - DO EVERY ONE OF THEM!

Just so I’m understanding correctly you’re saying to do every single Sophia course?

You have a few days to purchase the Sophia.org membership with a sale price of $149/year, that ends Dec 31, 2020.  With that amount of time, I highly suggest doing everything as the foundation courses will help you build your College Algebra, English Composition, and Statistics skills.  I would even recommend the College Readiness course if you're starting off, so yes, do everything...

If you need to brush up on those skills (like me), do them all - It's really personal preference, If you want to cut corners or want to finish faster, do all but the foundations and college readiness.  Here is the course equivalency table they have on the Sophia site, you get 20% discount on tuition at Excelsior if you decide to pick them over COSC/TESU - https://excelsior.sophia.org/

Actually, if you check, the only Foundations course that isn't actually accepted is Foundations of College Algebra. Everything else in Sophia's catalog is accepted as at least elective credit. Excelsior even accepts College Readiness as an elective.

Definitely do everything! That's about 90 credits for (as of right now) $149! A total steal!
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:

ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming

What upper division did you have him take?

For most people, I get them started with gen eds/free electives and let them choose the UL/AOS courses. Those are the hardest ones to recommend, so I would recommend them alternative credit providers to select from. In this particular case, I got them to do the Death Investigation course, and take CooperSmith courses. The main thing you want to make sure of is to speak with the advisor to verify it will come in as Upper Level.
