New to this website and need some guidance.

I am taking the Introductory to Social Sciences and History CLEP exam in two to three weeks. What is IC and how should I go about preparing for this exam. If I pass this exam I am done with shcool. If I fail I have to go back to class and also take a three credit clep. I want some recommendations and assistance as to how I should appraoch this exam and some hindsight from others who prepared for it.

How to Prepare for the Social Sciences and History General CLEP Exam


We do not offer a separate set of questions specifically for the Social Sciences and History CLEP Exam, but according to the Collegeboard content outline, here's what the test covers:
History (40%)
17% United States History
15% Western Civilization
8% World History
Social Sciences (60%)
13% Government/Political Science
11% Sociology
10% Economics
10% Psychology
10% Geography
6% Anthropology

We recommend studying the following subjects that we already offer to pass this exam:
U.S. History I: Early Colonizations to 1877
U.S. History II: 1865 to the Present
Introductory Psychology
Introductory Sociology
Principles of MicroEconomics
Principles of MacroEconomics

Don't worry about studying any of these subjects too closely, as the Social Sciences and History exam does not go into too much depth. Just do a quick overview of these subjects and get a general understanding of all the material covered, and you should be able to do quite well. One student scored a 75 out of 80 just by studying these subjects for two days (with no prior knowledge).

The exam also covers some Western Civilization and Anthropology, so if you really wanted to, you could study our questions on those subjects as well. That would probably be overkill, and a lot of unnecessary extra studying to pass.

InstantCert is a series of online flashcards with detailed answers to help you study for the test. There are usually 300+ flashcards per test. To use IC to help you prepare for the test you should plan to go over all the flashcards at least 3 times and be sure to read the answers each time.

Has anyone here done well on the Social Sciences and History General CLEP? IF so did it favor one scetion or another? I am going by what the websie is suggesting and wanted to see if any books are favorable as well?

Yes, I have taken the Social Sciences and History CLEP. According to the official description, it focused about 40% on History and 60% on Social Sciences.

I used REA's The Best Review for the CLEP as well as the Comex social sciences and history study guide (highly recommended - http://www.comexsystems.com). I also used some practice tests from those two books and from Princeton Review's Cracking the CLEP. I did not use InstaCert.

If you could get a couple of these books from the library, you could save some money. Anyway, hope this helps.

Cracking the AP U.S. History Exam, 2009 Edition = The best resource I found for this exam (got a 65). Your local library should have it as well as your local Barnes and Nobles. For the other subtopics (Economics/Sociology), read [url= http://www.amazon.com/CLEP-General-Exam-...791&sr=1-4 ]this[/url] prudently and/or IC; you will pass if you study these accordingly.

I was able to order most of the items on amazon for less than 20 bucks altogether. Also, how important is studying History 1877???

Anyhow, is it best to study the answer keys and IC's or read about the subjects?

I have found it is always best to use multiple sources for every exam. IC is a wonderful tool and I also include it when available.

If you join IC you'll have access to the subject feedback area where you will find a wealth of information on resources other students have used for this specific exam.
