New to Credit by Exam - I need help with TESC BA Social Science
#1
Can someone tell me if my plan forCredit by Exam can work. I think I need 58 credits. I outlined the entire plan and I marked the courses I plan to take (I think) and the ones I have completed I have 62 credits. Do I enroll now or take all my exams then enroll at TESC? Take the Capstone course? Graduate? How can I do this in the shortest amount of time. I need my degree as soon as possible, so that I can keep my job!

Would it help you in your job to have an associate degree until you can complete the BA? You are not far from one.

Thank you so very much! I am excited to get started and .... of course finish! One more question- Do I enroll as a matriculating student at TESC or just start taking exams at $36 per credit? But, I gather I am enrolling so that they can start a credit eval and I can add the credits to a transcript? So confusing ugh!
Also, what's the best study materials for exams. I was looking at Quizlet, is that a good source? I want to take 3 exams a month, do you think that's doable? so I can finish by the end of July. I'm trying for a promotion as a CRA which is offered sometime in the Fall at my company.

My job description has changed. When I entered my company a degree was not required. Now anyone hired new is required to have a 4-year degree in Health Science or a human service type degree. Almost everyone in my company has a 4 year degree, except me and one other person, and most have a Masters. So I definitely need to have that 4 year degree and fast. I'm in Clinical Research.

Quizlet is a limited resource, there are some good flashcards on there but the question is can you trust the original poster to be accurate in their flashcards. There are tons of resources available, many for free and some for less than a college textbook. If you are in a hurry you should check out the forum wiki. You should also join Instantcert and avail of the exam specific feedback which is invaluable, many find intantcerts flashcards helpful while others don't. I reckon an average cost per CLEP is around $150 including resources. You can start taking CLEP tests right away if you have the time. Many people average a test every 3-4 weeks although there are some brave souls who take one each week. It depends on your personal life and rate of study.
Don't forget that gaining college credit by taking exams is one of the reason's we're here. That's mainly possible through the flashcards made available by the owner of this forum : InstantCert Plus of course your hard work in learning and reviewing

I have been confused on this for a while, but you said that DSST fundamentals of counseling transcribes as PSY 331. I didn't see that on the TESC website. I would be really happy if that's true. I am 15 hours from finishing a BA Social Science with TESC. I did a lot of regular university classes also, just tying things up with testing out of classes. My area of study is this as of right now:

DSST History of Vietnam War HIS-351
DSST Rise and Fall of Soviet Union HIS-386
full credit class: Life span Human Development PSY-211
CLEP Educational Psychology PSY-230
CLEP American History II HIS-114
CLEP World History II HIS-122
DSST Substance Abuse SOS-305

so I need 9 more social science classes, and 6 of them need to be upper level. If DSST fundamentals of counseling counts as you said, then I am ok, if not then I may be in trouble. How would you suggest I finish these 9 hours? With 6 of them being upper level.

thornja1987,

I recommend the following:

TECEP Psychology of Women PSY-270
DSST Fundamentals of Counseling PSY-331 3UL
DSST Organizational Behavior PSY-361 3UL

Fundamentals of Counseling is listed on the TESC DSST page as COU262 but is transcribed in-house as PSY331. This has been the case since I can remember (2009). Not sure why they don't update the list, but they obviously have good reason. Many forum members have benefited from TESC awarding UL credit for this exam. Don't question a gift, just accept it!

Send me a PM if you decide to go with psychology of women. I have study notes you may find useful.

Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Bricabrac,

Thanks so much for your response. I just finished up retyping my evaluation. I know I am piggybacking on another thread here, but this is where I am right now.

TESC BA Social Science

I. General Education Requirements
1. English Comp. ENC-101/102= 6
2. Intermediate Algebra. MAT-115= 3
3. TECEP Public Relations Thought and Practice= 3
4. Intro to Information Systems. CIS-102 =3
5. World History 1. HIS-121 =3
6. Ethics. PHI-180= 3
7. Intro to Sociology. SOC-101 =3
8. Music Appreciation. MUS-100 =3
9. Prin. of Macroeconomics. ECO-111= 3
10. Historical Geology. GEO-121=4
11. Prin. of Microeconomics. ECO-112=3
12. General Psychology. PSY-101=3
13. Physical Geology. GEO-151=3
14. Human and Cultural Geography. GOG-120=3
15. US History 1. HIS-113=3
I have passed Introduction to New Testament and Introduction to Old Testament at a local community college, but I don’t know how they will transfer yet. They are 3 hours each, so I think I need 2 more hours in this section.

II. Area of Study: Social Science
A. Sociology
1. DSST Substance Abuse. SOS-305=3UL
B. History
1. DSST Rise and Fall of Soviet Union. HIS-386=3UL
2. DSST History of Vietnam War. HIS-351=3UL
3. American History 2. HIS-114=3
4. World History 2. HIS-122=3
C. Psychology ()
1. Lifespan Developmental Psychology. PSY-211=3
2. CLEP Educational Psychology. PSY-230=3
D. * Still need Liberal Arts Capstone TESC LIB-495 3UL (Not Completed)
I need 9 Social Science hours, with 6 of them being upper level. I cannot take Money and Banking, or Organizational Behavior. I tried and failed them, and retesting would put me out of my timeline.

III. Free Electives
1. Business Law. LAW-201=3
2. Microcomputer Applications. CAP-101=3
3. Prin. of Acct 1. ACC-101=3
4. Prin. of Mgt. MAN-301=3
5. FEL-101=1
6. BUS-101=1
7. CLEP Social Science and History. SOS 101/102=6

So I need 7 hours in this area. I plan to take CLEP humanities. I guess I may have to take another of the easier CLEP exams just for the 1 hour. I was thinking Principles of Marketing, but still unsure.
This info comes directly from my academic evaluation from TESC, so from my calculation I have 18 hours remaining and the Capstone class of course.

I definitely will take psychology of women, and counseling. I will PM you, but organizational behavior, I can't do. I failed it last month, and the 90 day wait would put me having to do it too late. So I still need 3 more UL social science. The degree planning is almost as hard as the school work, haha. Thanks for your time again.

General Education:
You have 49 credits plus the 6 REL credits to be transcribed.gives you 55. You can move SOS 101/102 from free electives to Gen Ed to complete that section.

Free Electives:
Look into the free online TEEX cybersecurity courses as to replace those 6CR. There is also a Kaplan PLA for 3CR that is also free and discussed a lot on the forum.
  • CIS299 Cybersecurity for Everyone/Non-Technical CYB101 (2CR) – TEEX
  • CIS344 Cybersecurity for IT Professionals/Technical CYB201 (2CR) – TEEX
  • MAN299 Cybersecurity for Business Professionals/Business Managers CYB301 (2CR) – TEEX

Area of Study:
You can take Organizational Behavior through Straighterline (cheapest option) or Penn Foster. Since you've already studied for the exam, the course should be a straight shot. FYI, Substance Abuse is considered Social Sciences not Sociology.

Additional credit:
  • You could use a buy one get get one free coupon (Code: BGS310) at Straigherline and take another course for free within the one month timeframe to add another 3 free elective credits. Recommend Business Ethics, it's open book and most have reported it to be very easy. It transcribes as PHI384. Note: you must add both courses to your cart and enter the promo code where indicated. SL Promo Codes.
  • You could also take the DSST Intro to Businesss exam. You have the experience of so many business courses you could probably sit that exam cold or with a basic reivew of the IC flashcards and replace the existing 1CR with 3CR.
  • Anpther option would be TECEP CIS107 Computer Concepts and Applications. The exam is similar to CLEP/DSST COS101 so you could use IC flashcards to study for that exam along with a copy of the textbook.

Good luck!
