New girl here, would like advice for Clep

lilacskin Wrote:Thanks Barcotta...where did you see the part that says they accept 24 clep credits?

Well--I'm glad you asked because I found it in a newsletter which turned out to be from 2009. However, if you look in the current handbook, which I've linked below, it seems to suggest that you can transfer in up to 90 (although I wouldn't get too excited about that number until someone confirms it).

Here's the link:

One last word of advice. Find someone in the counseling department who knows, understands and has experience with CLEP tests. BTW, they also accept DANTES--which are virtually the same but run by a different organization. If the person you're talking to starts ummming and errring when you mention CLEP exams, move on. My experience has been that shockingly few people take advantage of this and many guidance counselors know next to nothing about CLEP since no one asks. So, check this out and get in there and make it happen!

Thanks again barcotta! I am currently working with my advisor to see how many DSST are accepted. I was told 30 clep credits but it might be more. My school requires half the credits to be earned at their Uni in order to graduate. That is fine by me, as I wanted to take some classes anyway. I just wanted to cut the time down by a lot.

This may be a weird question but how do you all afford taking all of these tests? With my tuition I get financial aid so it's not all out of pocket. The one downside with CLEP is you have to pay out of pocket.

For me financial Aid meant I would have to take classes and every semester. Financial aid would also just be loans so I would have to pay it back anyway. So I paid tuition on a credit card and paid for my test cash ~$100 per 3-6 credits is VERY cheap. Each person has to decide what works best for them and make a plan. I also did not have the time either in daily hours or in years to do it the traditional way.

Many if not most of us here are older students with jobs and families so full time school is not a likely option.

That makes a lot of sense Lindagerr. It is for sure way cheaper than the traditional way.

Also do you all think it would be possible to take traditional classes while knocking some credits out with clep at the same time? I am ready to order the Clep official study guide 2012...so ready for this! I already took bio classes, american history, poli sci, theatre, and I am almost fluent in spanish. I feel like those tests will not be too difficult for me.

Hi lilacskin,
Here is link from your own university that gives the CLEP equivalencies.
CLEP | Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences

Call them up and see how many they take. It might be the same number they will have for transfer credit.
Hope this helps,

barcotta Wrote:Yes--it is certainly possible to work some CLEP studying in with your regular studies--and advisable. A visit to your school's site reveals that you can earn up to 24 CLEP credits--and some of the categories are VERY generous. I would start with Spanish. Score at least a 63 (out of 80--should be very doable if you're nearly fluent) and you get 12 credits right there. Imagine that. Four regular classes in one exam. Then I would look at College Composition which is worth six (6) and College Mathematics (reportedly the easiest of the math CLEPs) will get you another six (6). None should require extensive study. 24 credits for 3 tests and about $240. That's darn near two semesters. What are you waiting for????? Here's everything you need to know from your school's site:

Wooops, I guess I completely overlooked that Barcotta had posted another version of the link I provided. Smile

Don't be mad. It's the best kept non-secret in education. I could write a thesis on the phenomenon that keeps this readily-available extremely useful and beneficial information away from people and leads to a 90+% rejection rate for the people that do learn of it. I challenge you to find even one other person in any of your classes that has even HEARD of CLEP exams--let alone know anything about them. They've been around FOREVER.

One last bit of advice. You only need a 50 on each exam I believe (except Spanish) so I would NOT spend a lot of time trying to ACE anything. You should be prepared and I would recommend InstantCert as your main source for that, but my experience was that you really only needed to know a little over half of the material--the curve and lucky guessing often takes care of the rest. Good luck!
