New WGU MS in Management and Leadership

When do you start. Let me know how you like their program. I won't be finished with my BS until July but I'm definitely window shopping for a Masters Program.

I'm thinking the leadership and management might actually work for me. I do not think an MBA is extremely helpful for my purposes unless I was positive that I want to work in in a corporation or firm that specializes in corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, or bankruptcy, where an MBA could be very valuable. In my view, a leadership and management degree is enough to obtain a higher level paralegal manager job such as at a larger firm or for a legal department. Hmmmm.

I'm pretty disheartened at the fact that they still will not let me into this program. I'm stuck either doing the MBA or waiting until they open the program to all students. I start the MBA on Tuesday. I have a telephone meeting with my student mentor on Monday to decide which courses I want to start out with. After I get started, I'll start a new thread and keep everyone posted.

I'm certain that the policy is in place to hinder students from withdrawing, and then re-enrolling in the same program over and over. My situation is pretty atypical, considering that I withdrew to complete my degree at another school, and then returned as a graduate level student.

Bazaar set of events today:

I had my enrollment interview with my student mentor. We went over all the preliminary "stuff" for me to start my MBA tomorrow.

Then, at around 1750, I received an email from the registrar's office. The email said that I had been readmitted, and was cleared to start my program tomorrow (I had already received this email 2 weeks ago). However, this email named a different student mentor from the one I spoke with today.

Utterly confusing...

I think that's a good thing. I post from my phone frequently and if I don't feel like spell checking or grammar checking...I know ya'll will still get the point. Leave the nazi behavior for the classroom. I wouldn't grammar nazi someone unless they did it to me first. Then, I'd be e-stalking every post pointing out every misplaced tittle. Nah, I wouldn't do that either. Too much energy.

Think of it this way: If you have DirectTV, and then cancel your service.....wouldn't they treat you like a new customer if you returned a year later?

I disagree. I think the MBA is a MS lite. Here is why. Lets say you want to teach business courses at a community college. At a minimum you need to have a masters in the area (MBA works) but also six graduate courses in a specialization such as research methods, marketing, management, finance etc. A MBA will never give you that. To me, the MBA is almost like a liberal arts general studies degree for business. You get a sampling of courses but never get beyond "intro" level in anything. The MBA was initially designed for professionals with bachelors degrees in engineering, etc. to get a bit of a business education so that they know what they are doing when moving into upper management. It was not designed to produce scholars or specialists.

So if you really want to learn economics, get a MS in economics, not a MBA.

Thanks for sharing, but I never understood this trend of creating MBA-lites. My stomach literally turns when I see a degree program with "leadership" in the title.

The MBA is a professional degree. Law is a professional degree. I don't think that being professional vs research-oriented automatically makes a degree "lite." The degree being discussed here is not an MS in Economics; it doesn't even have a research methods course. The MBA is an interdisciplinary degree, but that doesn't equate to trying to be the light version of any one thing because it intentionally includes a little bit of everything. It's like getting a degree in social science. You can't say that a social science degree is sociology-lite, psychology-lite, political science-lite, or anthropology-lite. It's not trying to be just one of those things. The same could be said about a natural science degree. It's not biology-lite, chemistry-lite, or physics-lite. It's simply just interdisciplinary.

I know I've called criminal justice sociology-lite even though it's supposed to be interdisciplinary, but criminal justice's history really is rooted in sociology. IIRC, a study that looked at 30-something criminal justice programs found that a plurality of the professors had sociology degrees. Criminal justice is really just an applied version of criminology; and, criminology is really just a sub-field of sociology.

I think the whole 18 credit hour thing has been exaggerated for lack of a better term. I can guarantee you that most of my CJ professors with sociology degrees do not have any credits in CJ. 18 credit hours is more of a requirement when you don't have a whole degree that's in the field or a related field. There are MBA programs with 18-credit concentrations, however.
