New Plan, TESC Natural Sciences/Mathematics

I want to apologize because in my last few posts I got excited, and assumed some things about credits that turned out to be completely wrong. Maybe I'm still completely wrong, I hope you guys let me know that's why I love this forum.

I think the program that best suits my previous college history and goals is the TESC Natural Sciences/Mathematics Major

Program Requirements:

I. General Education Requirements 60

A. English Composition 6
CLEP English Composition (with essay?) 6 credits

B. Humanities 12
CLEP French 12 credits (does TESC award 12 credits for a high score?)
Intro to Philosophy(*From my canadian school, UWO) 6 credits
***If i have 6 extra credits here, would they transfer into my electives?
**Must include at least two subject areas

C. Social Sciences 12
Intro to Psychology(*From my canadian school, UWO) 6 credits
History: The Pacific Century (*From another canadian school, athabasca) 3 credits

II. Area of Study: Natural Sciences/Mathematics 33
A. REQUIREMENTS
1. Students complete 33 credits in the natural sciences/mathematics concentration.

2. At least three different subjects must be included, which provides for breadth of knowledge in the natural sciences/mathematics. Also, students must earn at least 12 credits in one subject area. A maximum of 18 credits can be earned in any one subject area in order to have a balanced interdisciplinary concentration.

3. Courses transferred to Thomas Edison State College are equated to the following levels: 100, 200, 300 or 400. A maximum of two college-level courses equating to the 100 level can be applied toward the area of concentration. A minimum of 18 credits equating to 300 or 400 Thomas Edison State College courses are required.

Lower Levels (now a lot of these are first year, I'm not sure if i'd meet the requirements of part 3, perhaps i could move these to electives?)

III. Free Electives (27)

Will try to fill with other tests, but not sure yet, since maybe my first year credits can't fit into the major requirements. Please any feedback is greatly appreciated, I'm new to this

Are you sure that Discrete Math is UL at TESC? TESC also has a Nutrition course that is a 200 level, so don't be surprised if they try to put yours at that level rather than UL. I also don't think that ALEKS Statistics will be UL at TESC, but maybe someone else knows. Maybe "Second Year Astronomy" would be UL, not LL, but ask an advisor.

As for testing out, the MIS DSST would be 3 UL credits.

Well the discrete math is really a third year course, I transferred it to athabasca and they put it at 300. It's a really tough course, I doubt they would put it as lower.

Also the current nutrition program I'm taking is 300 level, but I can see how schools would interpret it as such. According to ace, the three aleks stats courses should be upper level, but I think they are redundant.

Thanks for the info on that dsst course. I'll look into it. Any other options in the science/math area?

TESC has a 6 credit science course you can take online in 12 weeks.

They will give you only 1 ALEKs stats course, intro to stats. I know this for a fact, my business stats duplicated and I tried to get them to recognize it as a business course but they wouldn't.

Yeah I figured as much with aleks. Someone else posted the maximum you can get with aleks is 12 credits, 9 in the lower levels (cant recall exactly, just gonna do all of them, it's good for me) and one upper level stats. That's enough for my program plan, as I have it currently. I just hope it works out the way I'm planning it, which it probably won't

200 level courses are no longer upper level at TESC you need 300-400 level and I don't see you having 18 upper level credits.

Aleks intro to Stats is transcribed as Sta-201 at TESC. I am pretty sure you can not do the Natural Science/ Mathematics degree only through test. You may be able to do it with courses from other schools.

I got in before the 18 300-400 requirement, I have 16 upper level science credits Organic Chem w/ lab I & II 10 credits (taken at local CC) and Global Environmental Change 6 credits at TESC.

If the course you are taking is 300 level then even if TESC gives it 200 you can send them a course sylabus and appeal you shoul get the 300 level.

CLEP Chemistry is said to be one of the hardest exams with the highest failure rate. I would recommend Bio or Natural Science.

I don't know if TESC will take your computer classes as Science/math credits they may put them under a different area.

I'm quite sure computer science counts in this degree program...if you look on the tesc program plan website...

I think a lot of confusion comes from the different course rating systems, UWO used a very Canadian one, and Athabasca uses a very American one.

The Stats class I got a pretty brutal score on, so I'm tempted to find a way to not include that on my transcript, if that's even possible. They gave me 200-level but told me not to enroll in a 300 level class.

The last two Maths, 222 and 223 have already been evaluated by Athabasca as 300 level, as well as my Computer Science class. If I can add the nutrition course it should work out.

All bold courses should be able to count as Upper Level in the Major Requirements, that would be 12 right? If I did the DSST MIS and perhaps the ALEKS Stats I'd fulfill all the requirements, hypothetically.

I think if TESC accepts Athabasca's standards to be of similar level to theirs, they should interpret the transcript this way, right? I think it's a lot easier to show this through Athabasca also, every course has a webpage with a detailed syllabus and so forth.

TESC has its own Discrete Math course, and I think it's a 200 level course (check on that), which means that if the content of the first Discrete Math course you are took is similar to that of their Discrete Math course, they will regard yours as the equivalent, and thus 200/LL, but if the content of the second course if more difficult, you may have a good case for the second course being UL. Discrete Math is tough, regardless of whether the school considers it a 200 or a 300 level course.

Ohio U has some testing options- look for Multivariable Calculus and Differential Equations since you need UL. The only drawback is that they'll only be 2.67 semester credit hours each. For upper level stats (Probability and Statistics), LSU offers a course that should transfer as a 300 level course (always verify with TESC, though).

looks like I can't send my transcripts directly, they're going to be evaluated by a foreign credential agency, then send that to TESC, so i guess the decision is in the hands of that agency and what they recommend, on their websites they say the evaluation also determines what counts as upper level credit and such...I hate all the uncertainty

The DSST MIIS shows up on my eval as upper level and is sitting in the Nat Sci/Math portion.

My 2 classes at Penn Foster sys analysis and sys design are also upper level CIS prefixed but do not. Maybe I could get TESC to put them in there since the MIIS DSST is also a CIS prefix...
