Hi,
I have a question about what CLEP's would apply to most degrees. I have read that there are 5 General Exams (English Comp, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities) that are a requirement for most 2 year degrees. Is this true? Are there any others that would apply to just a general degree?
I am pretty new to this and I am 15 and still in highschool. I am still pretty undecided about my area of study, but wanted to try and CLEP out of the classes that would be required for most degrees.
I took Western Civilizations I this morning because it was something I was strong in. Was this a waste of time? Will it apply to most degrees once I decide what I want to study?
Any help would be appreciated!

First of all welcome! That's great you want to start taking CLEPS at 15. I did too! I pretty hard to answer your questions w/o a major or college in mind. Are you planning on going to one of the "Big Three" that are very accepting of cleps and dssts, do you have another school in mind, or still undecided? You can see a list of all the cleps here and all the dssts here. As you can see, most of them are general (cleps more so than dsst). Analyzing and Interpreting Lit. and English Comp are usually good ones to start out with. Or maybe College Math, if you're stronger there. Science is not my strong point and I managed to get away w/o any true science exams (natural science, biology, chemistry. I have a friend who is taking chemistry for "fun" :puke: That makes me sick. She's using it instead of FEMAs for a free elective. To each his own I guess . . .)

The schools that I have looked at accept a certain limited number of CLEP/DSST/AP credits. I have seen that often 30 is a cut-off number. Each school will decide how many credits to issue for a given test and what a passing score means.
So, an example would be that even though CLEP recommends giving 6 credits for Humanities with a passing score of 50, your college could say that they are only going to accept 3 credits with a passing score of 60. (I am totally making up this example BTW)
The reason most of us here are doing the Big 3 is that they accept a higher number of testing credits than most colleges, and are also flexible about accepting transfer credit. For an adult learner, this is a huge deal, but probably doesn't affect you. I am really glad that they'll accept my credit from 1993, but you weren't even born then :-)
I would say take as many tests as you want to and that you can afford. If you end up with a ton of credits and the school you want to go to doesn't take them, then just get your undergrad at one of the big 3 and then go work on your Masters at the school of your dreams.
My 15 year old is just barely starting to study for CLEPS so it's nice to see another great example!

Welcome and congrats on your motivation at such a young age!
If you know which college you'd like to attend, you should be sure to check the catalog and/or contact an advisor to see how many credits they will grant for AP, CLEP, DSST, UExcel, and ECE. Some schools will limit how many credit you can earn through examination and some majors will only grant credit for certain exams.
If you plan to earn your BA/BS, then apply to grad school or professional school when you're 17 or 18 yrs old, you'll most likely be able to test out of most of your credits if you attend one of the "big three". I attended Excelsior and can vouch for their good advising and service.
If you plan to attend Excelsior, you could take the following exams and, with a passing score, satisfy many general education requirements for a BS/BA in Liberal Arts (I'm not very familiar with the degree requirements for other programs):
1) AP English Language & Comp or UExcel College Writing or ECE English Comp (not CLEP)
2)CLEP College Algebra or DSST/AP Statistics or UExcel/CLEP Calculus or Precalculus
3) An exam in math or natural science
4) CLEP US History 1-2 or CLEP Western Civilization 1-2
5) An exam in art, music, or philosophy
The key is to check with your potential school and, if you decide to take exams for college credit... PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE the exams beforehand. It can definitely be done!

OP- if I were you, I'd look at taking CLEPs or DSSTs that wouldn't be duplicated by AP exams, and I'd stay away from the general CLEP exams because many schools do not accept them (probably most do not). AP looks much better to prospective schools you'll be applying to than CLEPs or DSSTs, and may yield more credit, so I think they should be your focus.
If things don't work out with AP later in your high school career, you can always take CLEPs and DSSTs at that point, when hopefully things like your prospective major(s) and school(s) become known.
