Are either of the two books vital? One seems to be simply a writer's guide and I own a few similar works. I'm getting ready to do the capstone this summer (enrolled yesterday).

Since it's been several months since I did my capstone, I can't remember the name of one of the books. It's mainly a reference work on how to make sure you have things documented and formatted properly. If you have other guides that cover the APA, MLA, Turabian, etc. citation styles, you should be OK. (TESC even refers you to the Purdue OWL website for any citation questions.)
The other is Writing the Winning Thesis or Dissertation, a book that's supposed to help you construct your capstone but is more geared towards writing for Master's or Doctoral programs. You're given reading assignments from the book to help formulate your paper, but TESC doesn't follow it verbatim. The assignments are mostly out of sequence with the book and sometimes contradict the suggestions given in the chapters. At other times the book doesn't address concepts or items the assignments refer you to the book for. I didn't find it very helpful. I used a library copy. If you can avoid spending money on this one, do so.

You will not need any. You will be provided with any reading assignments in your modules or syllabus. Good Luck!
