Need 42 units asap! FEMA??

My work is requiring me to get a specific license from the State of California. The state requires a AA or 60 college units at an accredited school in order that I can get this license. I need 42 units and the sooner I get them the better. Now I do not think they have to be in any special field of study, just 60 units. I am enrolled with TESC and have completed about 25 FEMA tests to be transferred to TESC. Now I need the others and I think TESC maxes out at 25. So I was looking into Frederick College and I would have to pay $79 per unit. Does this sound to any of you like it will work?

I got credit for 30+ FEMA courses and 2 NFA courses. Once you max out the FEMA courses, I would take as many 6 credit CLEP tests as you need to reach your goal. A "quick" 18 credits: Analyzing and interpreting literature, College Composition w/essay, and College mathematics. And there are many other "easy" CLEPs, Dantes, and Straighterline options.

Did TESC accept 30+ on the FEMA? I am not sure what their limit is. I just did a History CLEP and now will take the literature.

For me they did, 4 years ago. Sometimes the accepted courses are switched around, because FEMA changes them, so TESC makes revisions on what they accept.

Search the forum, I'm pretty sure someone posted an up to date list of accepted FEMA courses recently.

I believe the max number of credits you're going to get for FEMA credits that apply to a degree is 27 credits. However, TESC might allow you to "bank" the credits. TESC does have a credit banking program that allows you bank credits. They *might* let you bank the FEMA credits even though they wouldn't award you the credits themselves.

I'm not sure, but don't think there are 60 FEMA courses. This means you will need to pass some courses anyway. Since that is the case, take a look at some easy 6 point CLEPs. You can take "Analyzing & Interpreting Literature", "American Literature", and "English Literature" and have 18 credits in no time. Study for the "Art of the Western World" DSST (worth 3 credits) and "Humanities" CLEP and your up to 27 credits. These tests are all kind of interrelated, and you might as well finish it out by taking the "English Composition" CLEP and your up to 33 credits.

Now take advantage of a couple other 6 point CLEPs. The "Biology" CLEP is worth 6 point and the "Natural Science" CLEP is also worth 6 points and half of it is biology. The "College Math" CLEP isn't that hard either, and now you are up to 51 non-FEMA credits. At this point you you could look at doing whatever you need to do to get your AA --- OR --- with 78 total credits you start working to finish up a real BA in Liberal Arts. Just a thought.

My advice follows what the others have said. Grab what you can from FEMA (here is the updated list for TESC direct transfer: http://www.tesc.edu/degree-completion/do...review.pdf) and then knock out some exams. Per credit they are cheaper than doing anything with FCC's FEMA program. Start with Analyze and Interpret Lit and then pick out some that you enjoy. While you are doing that you might as well work on at least an AA to make your enrollment at TESC worth even more.

TESC will allow a max of 32 FEMAs. FEMAs only count as free electives for most of the degrees. There is a max of 27 free electives for the bachelor's degrees. The only bachelor's program that will allow FEMAs in the area of study, thus more FEMAs, is the Bachelor of Science in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. The AAS in Environmental, Safety, and Security Technologies will also allow FEMAs in the area of study. Technically, the FEMAs aren't real college credits until they are transcripted on to an official college transcript. The credit bank is not a real transcript. I'm not sure if the California agency will be able to tell.

The Army accepted a credit bank filled with FEMAs, to give me a promotion upon enlistment. They didn't question the validity of a credit-bank transcript.

FEMA is a good way to go especially if you like the format. I've done two for work and didn't enjoy them. The issue becomes if you fill in all your free electives with FEMA and you aren't doing a Homeland security or Criminal Justice degree you've been focusing on subjects that don't build foundations for your end degree focus. The same applies to CLEP although you can build a better educational foundation in the long run. As others have mentioned the 6 credit CLEPs are accepted by TESC and hundreds of other colleges and only cost about $150 or so including testing and membership at instantcert and some additional books which is a whole lot cheaper than pushing FEMA's through Fredrick College at $97 per credit hour.
