It all goes back to personal responsibility and due diligence doesn't it? I could provide links to community college programs that will grant an A.A. degree with the only math credits being in college algebra, but I won't. It's even possible to get a B.A. with the only math course being college algebra.

Restating the obvious, any course or credit by exam is fine only if there is a place for it - and there's no one size fits all statement for any one specific course.

Why would you? We already know that most degree programs require college algebra or some easier math course for education, social science, or business majors. I'm just pointing out a situation where someone majoring in a subject that requires more than college algebra shouldn't take the CLEP.

I stumbled on this thread by accident -- I was searching for a college algebra thread for a friend and this showed up. It's an interesting topic to me because I have a child who is in her 2nd semester of full time dual enrollment at the local CC. Last semester she took 16 credits and made the Dean's List. Lots of kids do this, I understand that. Jennifer has heard the story already... The issue is that when my daughter took the ACT she had just turned 15 and hadn't taken Algebra 2 yet. So while her English etc was great, her math was a 17-ish.

Fast forward to now. Child wants to take a Poly Sci dual enrollment summer course at a Christian University a few hours away. They are refusing to "accept" her for the summer course because her "math is below the 19" they require for admission (her composite score is fine). She got an A- in College Algebra last semester, so when she retakes the ACT (which is unfortunately after the last sign up date for the Poly Sci course) I think her score will go up. In the meantime I am frustrated at the unbending attitude of the University about a dual enrollment student who has a great track record. Because the classes were taken at a CC they "might not meet [our] rigorous standards" (said in a condescending tone). In the end everyone I've talked to has said they won't let her take even a POLY SCI course, all because her math was a couple points low.

It's frustrating.

so are we talking about a dual enrolled high school student or an adult high school graduate? I think the THREAD is talking about a dual enrolled high school homeschool student..... even though you keep using examples related to adult learners. For a high school student who has taken algebra 2, then absolutely yes they should take the CLEP (assuming they are prepared) because "planning" a degree in X when a student is in 9th or 10th grade (like a STEM program) and "finishing" the program are two different things- potentially separated by 3 academic years. Teens change their mind, so what starts out as an AS STEM degree and changes to Social Work or Nursing or Teaching or any of the 100+ options that don't require passing Trig+, then they are good to go. Yes, take the exam. Don't leave credit on the table in high school. It doesn't matter if they can't use it in college, it's good for 20 years and they MAY use it later.

Edit: my apologies for posting on a comment more than 6 months old lolhilarious
