Basic Questions
#31
As you can see below, I've done six CLEPS/DANTES already. From roaming on this board - very helpful, thanks to everyone - I read about taking:

ENG 100 from Penn Foster for my English requirment, and
ENG 103 for my Information Literacy requirement.
MATH 110 OR the College Math Clep for the Math reqirement.

I went to college for a few years in the 80's, I thought I had about 50 credits, but Excelsior said the quarter units added up to only 31. With my test credits, I now have 52 credits total.

Feel free to laugh at the line-up of classes I took, bearing in mind that I was in college in Northern California and wanted to be a Therapist and became a Massage Therapist/Hypnotherapist and I paint, act, and write!

****************************************************************************

From the college transcripts I have:

Biology 4 credits
Elementary Algebra (Math 50), 5

Creative Writing, 3

Basic Design, 3
Beginning Drawing, 3
Art and Early Symbols, .5

General Psychology, 4
Counselor Training, 3
Developing Human Potential (alt Psych) 1.5
States of Counsciousness (alt Psych), 3
Holistic Health (alt Psych), 3
Intuition, 3
Progressive Relaxation, .5
Personal Potential Psych, 1

CPR .5
Standard First Aid, 3
Normal Nutrition, 3

Hatha Yoga, 1

God and Ethics (Philosophy), 3

Music Ed., 1
************************************************************************

Now, here's what is on my list of tests to take:

World Religions
American Government
Humanities
Western Europe since 1945
US History I
US History II

Civil War (along with Hist I and II)
Anthropology (may be interesting)
Computers (may be helpful and/or easy)
Ethics in America (I don't know...)
World Population (I really don't know - am bored out of my mind reading the flashcards)
Lit. Instruction in Elem School (6 UL credits)
College Math (To meet Math requirement)
Management Info Systems (UL credits)
Organizational Behavior
Principles of Supervision

I choose the ones in italics because of interest and the others... ?

To meet UL credits and my Psych emphasis, it looks like I'll have to take the following costly Excelsior tests unless anyone has any altenative ideas:

Social Psych
Abnormal Psych
Research Methods in Psych
Psych of Adulthood & Aging.

After that, I believe I'd still need one unit! I think I will meet my requirements though, but I'm not sure. At least 15 units of Psych classes, 30 UL units, 3 Humanities, 3 Social Science/History, 2 Natural Science, 1 Math, required Math, English, Information Literacy, 120 units...

Any feedback and help will be much appreciated.

Also, can I just take the English Comp with Essay instead of taking the class through Penn Foster? Or can I go to a local college and test out of it?

I'd like to take the College Math test - would that satisfy my math requirment? I don't think that my Elementary Algebra class I took fulfills that. I'm also not sure if I can teach myself what I need to know or not, but Penn Foster charges $90 per unit plus $50 for shipping/proctors fees. That's pricey (I know because I just phoned them).

Not if you're planning on putting it through EC. Excelsior doesn't accept the English CLEPs - with or without Essay. I heard a while back that EC was going to bring back a form of Comp test that would cost as much as a CLEP. I'll have to look into that again (as I'll need to take it to replace the CLEP test I took before I knew I was going to EC).

I believe that it would fulfill your math requirement, unless you're going into a science/math-related degree, which you're not since you're going into Psychology.

Concerning learning College Math, you can do it. It may seem difficult, but IC has good cards for it, and Peterson's CLEP Success book is available online:

http://www.petersons.com/pdf/free/CLEPSuccess.pdf

The specific exam feedback is also excellent for this test. Good luck!

Thanks Ruddigore. I was always good at math, so if you think the math exam is doable, I'll give it the ol' college try!

Does anyone know if there alternatives to Penn Foster for English because it would cost $320 through them...

Oh, if you've always been good at math, then College Algebra should be a breeze. All that's required for a pass is brushing up on some of the more obscure math concepts (truth tables come to mind) and general algebra.

Haha, yes "always been good at math", but my last class was nearly 30 years ago! I'll have to do a lot more than 'brush up'.

I just finished StraighterLine English Composition. $99 for 28 days and did it while I was finishing an 8 week upper level online course with lots of writing in both. So....very doable.

Jenifer DeHart at StraighterLine is great and, for now, all is okay with Fort Hays to get EC credits.

And the first semester of English through Straighterline is straight forward and can be done relatively fast.
