MilSpouse pursing a Human Resources Degree...Advice??
#1
Hi all! I've been browsing this forum and am excited about obtaining a degree in Human Resources Management. I am a military spouse and a mom of 4...and i work full time so I'm looking at some creative inexpensive options. (self-paced would be ideal) I have about a few CC credits from CTC but between a deployment, PCS to NC, and new baby I had to put my education on the back burner because it was affecting my grades. Now that we're more stable I'd like to start again. Any suggestions would be awesome!

Here are my grades: (Note: I originally wanted to pursue a degree in Social Work but felt HR is something I've always wanted to do)

PHIL-1301 TD015 Introduction to Philosophy-C
BUSI-1301 TD013 Business Principles-B
DSMA-0305 TD009 Pre-Algebra-C (I HATE MATH!!Sad)

Hello there!

Have you done any CLEPs or DSSTs? They are a great resource for fast credit. TESC has an option for you:
BSBA in Human Resources Management/Organizational Management Program

The only courses that I think will be applied for credits are C and above.

There are alot of great resources on this website. Try looking around , there is an abundance of resources.

Thank you! I have not done any CLEPs or DSSTs. I plan to go to the education center on base to see what information I can get.

Thank you!

Fort Bragg? Pope? Where?

Don't forget the on-base schools, almost always, the prices can't be beat per credit. If you want to do the TESC option, I would second navy3912's comment about taking CLEPs, you won't have to pay a proctor fee on base, so that is additional savings.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

Good ole Bragg. Smile Thanks! I'll check out the schools on base while I'm at the education center. I thought spouses still had to pay a proctor fee. That would be good if that's not the case. Smile

Hmmm.. My wife never had to pay a proctor fee. She just had to pay the CLEP/DSST exam fee. Maybe it depends on the service?

A lot of good schools on Bragg. Interesting enough, Excelsior college is there also. They are like TESC in that they are very clep/alternative credit friendly. Many members of this board use either Excelsior, TESC or COSC. You may be able to enroll in one of the three schools I just mentioned as your main school, clep and straighterline most of your credits, and then use the base schools to fill in any blanks. TESC also has a military spouse friendly tuition. As long as your spouse stays active, you'd be eligible for the Military Degree Completion Program (my wife is doing this) which gives you the military rates which I believe are still capped at the TA rate ($250 per credit hour for online courses). You can do 24 credits worth of TECEPs, and do CLEPs and save a ton of money. If you're interested in something like that, let us know and maybe we can help you come up with a plan.

A correction. I found out my wife does pay a proctor fee on base for CLEPs and DSST. When my daughter took proctor exams for school, she didn't get charged and I assumed my wife didn't either, but apparently she does get charged about $20. Sorry about that.

Thank you so much for your help! I'm going to look into the Military Completion Program at TESC. Do I have to enroll there before having my transcripts looked at and before taking any CLEPs or SL classes?

If you are applying under the MDCP, there really is no benefit to waiting. In the past, members would first amass many CLEP, DSST, ACE credit and THEN apply to the "Big 3" schools to see what they would get. In the case of TESCs MDCP, there really is no need, you pay the application fee, and on the date of application you are considered enrolled and you can send your transcripts for evaluation. That usually takes about a month for TESC to finish evaluating, but you don't need to wait, you can search the forum or ask questions, and we can suggest courses you can take now while you're waiting so you don't waste time. Usually, members will suggest Analyzing and Interpreting Literature as a good first exam to wet your feet.

On a second note, you may want to check with Charter Oak State College also. They are military friendly also and many students on here have a very satisfactory experience with them.

Nice to see another MilSpouse on here Smile

I'm an Army wife currently in Europe and enrolled on the MDCP at TESC.
Cannot say enough about TESC and this amazing forum

Like Prloko said, there's nothing to gain by delaying application for the MDCP.
As long as you do 1 TECEP a year, you'll stay enrolled.

Yes you have to apply and send your transcripts in for your evaluation, but you can start putting your "test out" plan together while waiting for the eval
Mine took about 6 weeks
