Hahahaha, the robot voice. I use Read aloud reader for web pages and a combination of googleplay books, eReader Prestigio, and voice aloud reader for pdfs, all of which are free, but all have some form or another of robot voice. I love that virtually any material can be made into an audiobook in minutes and after time the robot voices don't even both me anymore. I love being able to absorb school work while running, walking the dog, driving, doing housework or any other brainless activity. It's very easy to rack up several hours of "reading" a day without really even having to put any additional effort, freeing up much more time for the actual bookwork.

Oh! Let me post one of my favorite websites/study aids ever: https://mynoise.net/

It’s my favorite noise generator and I use it EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Dr. Stéphane Pigeon is a saint! He developed the site to help with tinnitus and it exploded from there. All it takes is a donation of at least a dollar and you get access to all the generators and add-ons forever. The iOS app only takes a one-time payment of (I think) $5.99 and you get all past and future soundscapes forever.

I use it for work, study, reading, writing. The shussher generator saved my sanity when my infant son was super fussy and couldn’t sleep. I mean, it’s honestly one of my favorite things ever. Not even exaggerating.

He goes out to the field and professionally records the natural sounds with professional equipment. If he can’t get to a location, he contracts contributors to capture the sounds. They have so many different noises and soundscapes for just about every situation imaginable: sleep, study, health, nature, concentration, soundscapes for RPGamers, babies, creepy soundscapes, etc., etc.

He’s also super active with his users and encourages people to e-mail him with suggestions, which I’ve done a few times.

While it’s totally worth it to donate to get access to everything, you can listen to a lot of the sounds for free. I’m kind of shocked that I’ve never posted about it on this forum before. It’s perfect for our users.

I’d encourage everyone to give it a shot and throw him a few bucks if you find it useful. I’m not affiliated with the site except as a supremely satisfied user, so this isn’t a paid ad. It’s just been so useful to me in my everyday life that I try to tell everyone about it.

Hope it helps someone out there. It’s certainly helped me tremendously.

MyNoise is awesome! I paid for the app, I found it so useful. It doesn't really help that much with my tinnitus, but it's good background study music-type stuff.

Just be aware that they'll all choke on symbols and web links. That is, you know how some texts are broken up by lines of *** between sections? It will read "asterisk asterisk asterisk" or "Aitch tee tee pea colon slash slash double you double you double you dot..." and that can be a bit jarring. I would recommend removing those (if you can) before feeding them to Speechify. Otherwise, the premium voices sound almost exactly like an actual human reading the text. If it still sounds "wrong", try adjusting the WPM to make it read faster or slower. I think I've got mine set to around 110 and that sounds relatively natural, not too fast or too slow.

It helps you tune out distractions and focus on what you’re doing. He actually goes into a bit of how it works in the blog I linked to.
